I'm looking at a 4.0 tomorrow that has an in-service date of 9/18/06. Do any of you know when the updated head gasket was used? I read here that it was "later in 06 model year." Can we pin that timeframe down closer? Thanks

It would do more with the build date which should be on a sticker inside the driver front door frame.

That being said, I don't know when they switched. My truck is a 03/2006 :/

I don't know the build date yet, but assume it's fairly close to the in use date. Have you had a leaking head gasket in your 03/06 truck? Thanks.

I've read that the HG part number changed in mid 2005 so it was a running production change that AFAIK never received a TSB. My understanding is that the main contributing factor is the truck overheating at some point so perhaps you can find service records and make sure there's nothing like that in its history?

Common belief is that it changed sometime in 06. Still haven't heard an exact date.

I agree, seems like it is an unknown at this point... I researched it for a couple hours after buying my 06 and couldn't find anything definitive ... I have ~140k with no issues, but would be nice to know if my truck has the updated part # or not.

Earlier in another post I was asking about 06's as there seem to be more of them on the market in my area. Several people commented that I should be concerned about the HG failure and that apparently that problem was solved in "later 06."

Here's the earlier reply when the 06 HG concern was first brought up:

Yeah, mine was made in 03/06... honestly the only head gasket failures I have come across have been 05s (not that I have been looking) Im not really concerned about it, but it would be nice to know when the updated the gaskets. Doesnt seem like it should be this hard to find an exact date.

The HG was the deciding factor when I sold my 05 at 120k. I decided not to take the risk of one failing, labor is very expensive in Northern California where I live. It could have cost up to 5k to repair which was close to 40% of the value of the truck at the time.

I don't know for sure yet. It did overheat once, but quickly came back down. It was low on coolant and I found that my thermostat housing is leaking. I haven't changed it yet to determine if that is the only cause of me losing coolant.
