Not sure where to post this so I'll drop it here and see if any of you have any ideas on this.

I'm not a tree-hugger, but since I do all of my own oil changes, I'm getting a lot of 5 quart oil jugs stored up in my garage. I give my used oil to a friend with an oil burning furnace in his shop, but you never get five quarts back out of the engine during a change.

If I could buy oil locally by taking in my own jug, I'd do it. Short of throwing my old jugs in the trash, what other options are there. I don't know of a recycling place in the area that would take them. I hate for all of them to end up in the landfill.

    Any thoughts??

If you have a local chain like pep boys or auto zone.... I believe They are oil collection sites. Other wise i would ask your local auto parts store or use Google and enter oil disposal or oil collection with your zip code

I think he means the jugs.

OP-i always put mine in the recycle bin when they were empty. If you want you can let them drain out upside down overnight to get most of the oil off the sides. But the jugs have the recycle thing on them, at least mobil 1 did. So after dumping into my engine, into the recycle bin they went.

Yes, the jugs. I end up with more empties than full ones with used oil in them. We don't have a recycle place around here that I'm aware of that takes plastic. I'll give some of the auto parts stores in the area a call and ask about it.

I'd like to see a closed product loop. If you sell a car, you must take that car back at the end of its life. If you sell a jug of oil, you must take the jug and used oil back at the end of their lives.

I honestly think a lot of recyclables are still hauled to the dump even after being put in the correct bin. The market for recycled plastic is just not there

This is true, at least in my area. Not because of low demand for materials, but because of impurities. The material needs to be pretty clean or it will not be recycled. E.g. plastic or foil food containers with food on them do not get recycled. So the used oil jugs might not be recycled if they are contaminated with used oil, sludge or sediment.

OP I suggest you find some cheap solvent (mineral spirits, carb cleaner, etc) and put a couple ounces in each jug then shake it around real good to clean the sediment and sludge from the jugs, then dump that waste in with your next oil recycling. Repeat if necessary, should get the jugs pretty clean. Then put 'em in the recycle bin. That's what I would do. Actually I am facing sort of the same container backlog... not with my fresh oil jugs because those get drained real good and go straight to the recycle bin. But I use 6.5-quart laundry soap containers for recycling used oil, they are big and made of real heavy plastic with a tight cap. Anyway they get nasty after 8 years of use (thick layer of sediment and sludge at the bottom) and need to clean them out before recycling. Been saving up the new jugs, have about 4 of them getting in the way because my garage is full of toys and stuff. Quality problems LOL!

I just take the jugs to autozone, dump the oil in their container, then throw the jug in the bin right next to the oil recycling station. Then who knows where they go...
