    Hello!

I now have a 2017 offroad TRD, which replaces a 2004 SR5 that got to 250K before going to a new owner.

I love the heck out of the new truck, but it's bigger than the 2004, and I wonder: to get good performance on marine mud and sizeable rock down in Baja this December, should I be looking into wider tires?

Can you even put wider tires on the stock rims, or do you need to get new rims?

I took the old truck down some pretty rocky and muddy roads, including one that ate up my buddy's Ford Ranger -- which had thinner tires and a heavier load. Please help me out if you can, thanks!

You can run 285s in stock wheels as far as width is concerned.

I think it’s 1/2 inch outside recommended wheel widths, but that’s a liability thing, not a fitment thing. Lot of guys running them.

You won’t fit that size tire without some level of cutting, lifting, additional parts or a combo thereof.

Yup, 100% on the stock suspension, with Bilstein shocks and whatever else is supposed to be special about the off-road TRD package.

Sounds like I'm not going to get away with just getting some new tires on there. Darnit!

I probably sound massively ignorant, and am, but my old truck got through some pretty serious stuff on Yokohama Geolanders and replacement shocks that weren't anything special. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT9SJWq2NqE

You could always run 265/65 with no issues which will get you a little bigger and wider.
