Go to a shop. Tell em what u want in sound.
Loud, mellow, throaty (for a v6), raspy.... whatever u want.

Ask them to pick 3 or 4 of THEIR choice within a set budget you have, and of differing brands. Ask them to cut the stocker off, clamp 1 of the ones they selected into your stock straws, and allow u to start the truck and throw a rev.

Repeat the process and remember which 1 you liked the sound of.

Tell em which 1 u liked the soud of.

    Have it welded on.
    Ask the model afterwards.
    Pay

    Drive home happy

The same shit everyone else has.
Basically. Same size tubing. SMaller muffler. Shiny TRD tip.

That said. I like mine. Its a hair louder than stock, but its not obnoxious like some aftermarket set ups are on small displacement V6 engines. I feel like it bridges the gap between stock and aftermarket rather well. Would I buy another? In a heartbeat... If I could find another used one for 200$. Would I pay retail? Probably not.

My last vehicle had an overly loud exhaust on it. Bigger displacement engine swap, header, high flow cat, 2.5" straight pipe dumped in front of the rear wheel on the driver side. It sounded glorious but it was loud. Google "VR6 straight pipe" and itll give you a good idea.

THis time around, I wanted something quieter.

Serious question, would a shop actually let a customer do this? I've never had exhaust work done somewhere besides my own garage but this sounds like this best way to figure out what sound you would like without making youtube guesswork.

    Been there done that myself.
Said this dozens of times over the years and had people do just this.

    So, odds are yes.

Maybe call ahead and make sure they will do this. I suppose some shops may say no, but its a simple procedure and they are getting a sale.

    Youtube sucks imho
Your stuck hoping the persons camera is picking up the entire frequency (most dont), and then hoping your speakers can also reproduce the source correctly.

My gopro for instance didnt show any difference between short tube headers and long tubes. In person the difference was drastic.

TRD cat-back is advertised by Toyota as an 8hp gain.

Yes for sure, I’ve done it too with a couple cars over the years. Definitely the way to go in my book.

Sounds like a pretty good method to go about making sure you get the best sounding muffler one likes.

They also claimed their (trd) latest intake for the 2nd gen tacoma was safe.

    It runs lean.

They also claimed 245hp for the 1grfe in 2005 but when held to sae standards is and remained 236hp for the single vvti 1grfe.

They claim 1100 or 1200lbs cargo capacity on certain cab configurations of the 2nd gen tacoma... we know how that looks with only 500lbs tho.

What you like will be different than what others like. Hearing it in person is the way to find what’s best for you, just like I tell sax players about picking out a new sax.

Same concept when buying speakers.... have someone flip a/b switches to different speakers. U keep ur eyes closed...
Then hope u can afford the speakers u like the sound of best.
