To be extremely honest, I was pretty disappointed with the 3rd gen powertrain and transmission. The engine lacks grunt, gets okay mileage, and shifts like crazy. I'm a huge Toyota fan and love the look of the 3rd gen. But Toyota really dropped the ball in terms of engine offerings for the new Tacoma.

I know there are various fixes out there, but I'm tired of Toyota not giving a damn about fixing/addressing real problems. I'm sure Toyota will keep selling Tacomas... And lots of them... Without even trying...

But I'll be damned if I don't give the Jeep Wrangler Truck some consideration. Looks the part, Wranglers have great resale, good reliability (real standout from the rest of the FCA offerings), and great 4x4 offroad performance. And last but not least... Turbodiesel. The diesel engine is confirmed for the non-truck variants of the Wrangler, so it's surely going to be available on the truck variant (Scrambler).

    http://autoweek.com/article/rumormi...r-pickup-be-called-scrambler-get-diesel-power

What do you guys think? I know this isn't the right forum... But I've seen more complaints about the 3rd gen than any other gen. Anyone else thinking of making the move?

For every 1 complaint there's 1000 more praises. Jeep trucks to little to late imho.

Owning a Jeep for years they definitely aren't great to drive long distances or in a headwind. No thanks to the Jeep "truck".

Looks like a compromise to me. Not 100% a truck and not 100% A Jeep... A bad version of both.

My family had a 2002 V6 DCSB TRD with lockers. It was amazing. I'd take a brand new one of those over a factory fresh 2017 Taco.

So no you dont own one, nor do you own a 3rd gen....

    HAHA, this will be interesting.

Really though, you lost me when you said Jeep was reliable. Jeep, Fiat, Chrysler and the whole gang are seriously the least reliable vehicles in the world..

What the fuck. So you don't own a third gen, and I'm going to guess you haven't test driven one, but you already made the judgement?

Get ready boys, we got a good one coming up.

I've driven one for about 250 miles. I rented a stock TRD OR V6 2017 on Turo

My family's 2002 V6 feels more alive than the 2017. I've been waiting so long for the 3rd gen. I never buy. First model year of any new redesign. So I was hoping 2017/18 would be sorted and great. The truck is shifting like crazy. Don't know if the TSB was done on the particular truck I rented.

Nonwithstanding, I also have a great relationship with my Toyota dealer, so I've been able to take out two of their Tacomas for extended-ish test drives. Out of all three I've driven (1 Turo, 2 dealer), all of them feel gutless and shift unnecessarily.

I've read about shiftpro and the like, but feel like it's silly that I would have to address that issue on my own, instead of Toyota directly from the factory.

You can accuse me and insult me all you want, but I don't see the great value in buying a 35k+ truck and not having a good transmission off the lot from the dealer.

Also, how did you jump to the assumption that I didn't test drive one from my original post?

I know that complaints are a lot more publicized than praise. That goes for everything, not just trucks. But the power on this truck is just... Lacking. Maybe it's because I live in California and highway speeds here are typically higher (not speed limits, but actual traffic speeds). I feel like when I went onto onramps, I would give it quite a bit of throttle... And then nothing... Nothing.... Nothing... Finally something. It almost felt a little dangerous to be honest. Going on the pedal I had nothing, than all of the sudden I had power and sort of launched a bit.

I'm definitely considering it. If I can find a clean one with a TRD blower... I would be very interested. Trying to find something on the Western seaboard. Something fly and drive ready.

I'll definitely have to test drive one to experience this. I'll probably end up renting the new generation Wrangler on Turo if it's around 100$/day. Just take it out for a day or two and experience how it handles/daily drives. The turbodiesel has me excited.

I don't understand what you're getting at? I've put over 50k miles on that 2002, it was my primary vehicle for most of high school and into college. Then I moved into a city and didn't need a car.

Also, as far as the 3rd gen goes... Obviously I don't own one. I posted a thread asking about an alternative to the 3rd gen. I have about 350ish miles in the 3rd gen, and I can't say that I enjoyed even 10% of those miles. The 2002 feels a lot more alive. Maybe it's the less weight to carry or the power delivery on the older V6.

It's all in your mind dude.

I pass people with ease with this truck in socal all the time, and I also drive for a living. If people would stop speeding to beat oncoming traffic and just wait to merge behind others there would be less accidents imho.

Gluck with your purchase, whatever it may be.

To the OP, buy what you like to drive, that's all you need to do whether its a Jeep, 1st, 2nd gen Taco or something else.

BTW, just because you don't like how the 3.5 with the auto is paired doesn't mean there's a problem with the truck. Plenty of people do like it and the sales numbers show it every month. Do you think the company should change the design just to please you? It's probably not going to happen.

I don't like how a Jeep handles on the road but that doesn't mean there's a problem with the Jeep. It just means I'm not a customer for that brand and model. I don't bash the Jeep, it's just not something I'm interested in.

    Good luck with your search.
