    I'm in the market for a mountain bike - nothing fancy for off-road or anything. Mostly use it riding on dirt/gravel roads for running the dogs and riding into secret fishing spots.

    Any recommendations on brands? I'm figuring $800 range?

    The bike I'm thinking of is a 2010 KHS Velvet that I put a Fox 36 fork on in 2011. It's a medium frame which is just on the cusp for me at 5'11". If you're taller than me I wouldn't recommend it for you. The bike was $1700 new and the fork was another $1100. It's full suspension, 7" travel in the front and 6.5" in the back, has a remote height adjustable seat post (drops out of the way for more clearance in steep or technical terrain). I'd give it a full once over before selling it to you.

    Kudos to the 5000w Husky Generator (Home Depot) with Subaru engine that I purchased back in 2008. Sucker's been running 24/7 since early Monday morning powering 2 refrigerators and a chest freezer as well as random appliances here & there. Consuming only 5 gallons of gas each day and has consumed some oil (as expected). It shut off yesterday afternoon due to low oil sensor, I only needed to add 3 oz. and it's back up & running.

    If you were buying it brand new, way overkill and way out of your price range. It's a solid bike though even if it is a few years old, and I'd sell it to you for $500 if you want it. I might even be able to talk my girlfriend into a trip to Portland to meet you with it.

    I feel your pain Mark, due to Irma I lost my power for a week. My 6k watt generator made it bearable, we ran the fridge, TV, box fans in each room & charged phones. Like you it ran 24/7 & used about the same amount of gas. I'd always top it off at like 10 pm before I went to bed so I wouldn't have to get up in the middle of the night. Then I'd top it off again right before I left for work & get more gas on the way home but it wasn't easy to find because of the hurricane. Haha
    And the same thing happened to me with the low oil & it was the middle of the night. Haha
