For the past 10 years, I have had either a Jeep JK or JKU and I now have a 3rd gen Taco which I just bought a few weeks ago. I thought about waiting for the scrambler, but I didn't want to get the first year of the new truck and I didn't want to wait a few years to get one. If the scrambler was out now - I would have strongly considered it over the Tacoma.
Overall, this would be my comparison of my experiences with a JKU and my new tacoma:

    Jeep Pros:
    - awesome offroad - IMO better than the Tacoma - SFA, short wheelbase, simple manual t-case, BLD system or E-lockers front and rear...
    - great reliability contrary to the stereotypes(most of the wrangler problems are due to abuse offroad) - the pentastar engine is basic and reliable, basic auto and manual trans and DANA 44/30 or 44/44 combo in Rubi. Simple frame/body and not much to go wrong.
    - Solid, Fully boxed frame
    - Doors and top are removable - awesome in the summer
    - More Fun to drive(subjective opinion)

    Jeep Cons:
    - removable roof and doors - make it very noisy, less refined feel and ac/heat loss
    - safety from side impact is worse due to the doors
    - Due to SFA, handling and ride are not great
    - No Bed(scrambler will fix this)
    - For the scrambler - long wait until it is out and it will be a new model/possible problems

    Tacoma Pros:
    - It has a pickup bed, and I like the composite material
    - Better storage in the cab
    - Great offroad - probably one of the best trucks made for offroading - I would say it is only a little less capable than a wrangler
    - Feels really solid - feels like it has better build quality - this is mainly due to solid doors/fixed roof
    - Good reputation for reliability(I have only had mine for a few weeks, so can't comment from experience)
    - Better ride quality and quiet.

    Tacoma Cons:
    - I have heard about Auto trans probs(I have a manual and I love it)
    - Not quite as good as the jeep offroad, although my TRD OR is fairly close to a JKU sport.

Overall, having had both - I like both wranglers and tacomas.
I personally got a Tacoma because I would not buy a first year of a new vehicle and did not want to wait for the scrambler. I am very happy with my purchase and I really feel that I got a great truck at a reasonable price.

I'd have to be in the market to consider any purchase which I am not.

Jeep pick up? Looks cool, I liked the conversion for the Wranglers, currently forgot who made it, and I think that is done.

Fiat/Chrysler would have been better off marketing a new Ram Dakato, or compact p/u with a new name.

Four door Wranglers are cool, but not as cool as the two door. I like jeeps, Toyota used their rear wheel arch design on the Tacoma. I'd drive a Wrangler p/u, I think it will sell like a H3 pick up, not very well.

I give it 5yrs or less on the production line.

I just got my 2017 Taco, I personally don’t see an issue with the power output or transmission. Is this something that’s just preference are there real issues? Any reports of transmissions blowing up?

I considered waiting for the Jeep truck, but it just doesn’t offer much other than a wrangler with a bed. Other Jeep’s I’ve owned all got terrible fuel mileage.

I'm not sure that this isn't a troll, 3 posts, no indication that he owns or ever has owned a Tacoma.

Whatever, FWIW, I have a JKUR and really like Jeeps (just Wranglers and their predecessors, not the other stuff they make). I gave a lot of thought to waiting and killing two birds with one stone by selling both my Wrangler and my truck and getting a Wrangler truck when they come out. But from what little I have been able to determine from the rumors and speculations about the forthcoming Wrangler pickup, it'll have a 4-5' bed, and I need a 6 footer. Yeah, I could live with a shorter one but I don't want to.

By the way, my DCLB isn't available with a manual option, so I have the much maligned automatic. Mine works great. Yeah, it shifts periodically. Isn't that what automatics are supposed to do?

Don't all new automatic transmission suck?

    Too many gears and cvts.

There are some new automatics that get good reviews.

I do realize the 3rd gen is not using some new fangled at technology. Just pointing out that there are a lot of complaints with new automatic transmissions.

No problem with the 3rd generation Tacoma at all for me. Test drive doesn't really help you a whole lot either, because these trucks don't start running better until they get around 7500-10000 miles on them. By then they are broken in and transmission learns the way you drive and smooths out. Jeep suck, I would wait on the new ranger over the jeep any day.

Be careful making anecdotal statements regarding "more complaints about the 3rd gen than any other gen." Can you provide data to support your statement? I don't think there is a problem stating facts about powertrain/shifting complaints, as they are documented on this forum; however, you came to a 3rd gen forum blasting the very vehicle we own while throwing around statements that aren't factual. You should have re-titled your thread "Disappointed in Toyota...Toyota engine sucks...Toyota doesn't care...Wranglers great resale...Wranglers great reliability...and Wranglers great 4x4." At the least, it should have read "Reasons why I'm considering the new Wrangler truck." Your bias is bleeding through your thread. If you want to know if people are thinking about switching, ask the question and create a poll. If you're tired of Toyota, buy whatever you want and bounce to a new forum. I'm sure the Wrangler forums would agree with your anecdotal statements and feelings about the 3rd gen. And make sure you tell them you never actually owned one (but you did rent one that one time you stayed at a Holiday Inn).

I have had a number of the Jeep JK's. If I had an hour I would detail all the problems from sand in the castings, bad oil coolers and bad heads. The 3.6L is total junk and would never own another. My wife has a Renegade (made in Italy) which has been trouble free and it has a much better fit and finish. Bought my Tacoma to rid myself of the JK nightmare.

the main problem with the jeep... its under Fiat. They suck.

Also my roommate has a 4 door jeep hard top. The ride is not great and its loud. The Pentastar doesn't offer a good amount of power either.

How do you compare the Rennegade to a Wrangler?

The Rennegade has more in common with the larger Fiat I forget what it's called.

The renegade looks cool, seen one with some negative offset wheels, reminded me of a rally car.

First you said 250 now you say 350. Which is it? Sounds like bullshit to me.

Thank god this thread was moved to a section where it will die.

I've never owned a Tacoma let alone a Toyota at all. All I knew is that I wanted a truck, reliable history, not full size and 4x4. What truck is that? The Tacoma. You talk about living in SoCal and freeway speeds. I call bullshit. I just got rid of a 2016 Subaru STi so I know about speed. Like Jukeboxx13 said, I pass people all the time. When I get on a freeway and "step" on the gas I go. Sure the double OD takes some getting used to but the power and speed are there if you know how to drive. Ive been trolling this site for a bit and I hear people all the time talk about "lacking" in power. Dumb. And I should know after owning two Subarus. If new owners and people that don't even own a 3rd Gen knew how to drive it or maybe drive it in the first place they wouldn't talk that bullshit. It's a truck, not a race car. You want a fast car get a fast car. You want a truck and don't need/want a full size get a Tacoma. Mines a DCSB, Sport 4x4, AT.

Actually if you look at the history of every company that has owned Jeep... maybe it is Jeep lol.

I have not driven a third gen but am interested in one. It sounds as if it basically has a car engine and the automatic is less than ideal... but if you get the manual you can shift it when you want to. I haven't driven one yet but have to agree, the powerband of the engine is far less than ideal for a truck (at least on paper anyway)

The only way I am getting one is with the manual though.

Can you read my entire replies? I rented Turo and had two extended test drives. Turo was 250 miles and I used all of it. And the test drives from my local dealer were pretty long. So I said 350ish total.

Having owned 5 jeeps I have some input. First and foremost, even a used jku that’s loaded(I’m taking a 15-16 model) will run you pretty close to, if not 40 grand. That’s an absurd amount to pay for a vehicle that really isn’t good for much other than off-roading..which they are good at doing. They get terrible mileage. I mean terrible. My buddy has a hard rock that’s factory and he averages 12-14 mpg. I just took my 16 off road double cab on a 6 hour trip with my new stt pros and averaged 19-20 overall. Worst I average is 16.5-17. The truck is going to be outrageous to buy for the first few years because every jeep person ever has had a hardon for a Jeep truck. Several jeep models throughout the years have had all sorts of problems. Bottom line sure the trans sucks and they could use a little more power but if you buy one, OVtune it and drive it you’ll be less money and pretty happy
