Nope, deigned to be in the middle of the range and not reflect temp swings unless there is a problem. The general public wants a happy gauge that says everything is fine. If the
gauge fluctuated, can you imagine how many of the automotive uneducated citizens would perceive it as a problem and run to the dealerships?

T-Stats provide a base, not a ceiling, in regards to operating temperature.

Personally speaking, me I have no interest in switching out to a 170* thermostat because of the modifications involved in retrofitting the new one in. Truck always run like a top and has no detonation or pinging at any point. That being that I live in California and have to deal with the cheap gas. Supercharger with the smallest pulley config as well.

There does reach a point where the engine is running too cool to where it will not burn the fuel mixture correctly due to lack of tuning. Our computers are set to run at optimum with the temperature thermostat we have. Switching to anything lower and it may set codes for thermostat rationality or similar.

Like I said, I'd rather not open that can of worms.

Just because the coolant readings indicate 200 or so does not mean that is what the stock t stat is set to open at.

On our trucks the stock t stat is set up to open at 180*... bear in mind that is when it STARTS to open. Depending on your driving conditions, that number will rise as high as 200 or slightly more if the t stat needs to fully open...

With that said, we are talking a 1st gen here. No retrofitting for a lower thermostat and we do not have an air/water intercooler like you do.

    Apples to oranges.

I didn't even realize this was 1st gen. I just saw supercharger somewhere in the thread. Lol.

However, the thermostat set to start opening temperature has usually always been 180* by Toyota.
