consensus is go with the offroad if you're going to see any dirt because you get a locker at the same price point. if you are planning on change the suspension or add an air locker yourself then the sport gives you a fake hood scoop.

All depends on how you'll use the truck, mod the truck and what 'things' you think are essential.

Fill us in and folks will be able to give more accurate recommendations.

    OFF ROAD 4x4, no comparison.
For the same price as the SPORT (which has no traction advantages over a base Tacoma 4x4) you will have the full four-wheel traction of MTS (A-TRAC), Crawl Control, a Rear Differential Locker, and Bilstein shocks. Plus, better for off-road 16" tires.

I just got my new 2017 Off Road last Friday. I actually went looking for the Sport. I like the Hood Scoop on the Sport along with the painted match bumpers and fender flares. But I decided to go with the OffRoad after seeing the 4x4 features. I will be able to benefit the OffRoad features more than the cosmetic features of the Sport.

I had a 17' sport and took it back. While driving back roads with pot holes and patched holes it bounced too much at speed with lost traction. The off-road just rides a lot better.

I have a trdsport. Theres definate benefits of the offroad but in canada you get alot of nice features on the sport that dont come on the offroad. For example i wanted a manual transmission. Trd sports come with blindspot monitoring, wireless charger, scoop, firmer suspension, 17inch alloys, painted bumpers, cross traffic alert, and a sunroof, none of which is available on the trd off road. I woukd like the locker but in reality i probably wont use it. Im putting 16s on anyway for winter tires. And my crawl control is my right hand and left foot. In reality you need to make your choice depending on your needs not the advice of stangers on the internets. Either way youll have a great truck youll love for years!

I test drove both extensively. My truck is a daily driver and I drive off road about 5% of the time to fish, hunt and camp. And when I say off road it's not rock crawling. So for my needs the sport fit the bill better than the OR. The on road manners of the OR are way too spungy for me and the was definite suspension roll that gave the truck a less planted feel.

As others have said, figure out what you need and what you'll use the truck for and make the decision. And don't forget to price out a SR or SR5 and the cost of making the specific mods you're interested in and spending the difference on those mods instead of going with one of the TRDs.

I had a 13 trd off-road and now have a 17 trd off-road. The rear locker has saved me more than once in the sand and snow. The off-road has all the options that you’d ever want or need. I have the premium technology package including the JBL upgrade, so it has all the creature comforts.

Plus, I MUCH prefer the black fender flares over the paint matched,. Much more aggressive look. Hope this helps.

My OffRoad has the blind spot monitoring, wireless charging, sunroof, and rear bumper is painted. Just wish I had the sport hood lol.

Thats good advice.. better to spend money where you want it instead of forced into a package you only use 50% of.

The sport hood sucks for actually going off road. I have one and the decreased visibility makes a big difference when approaching obstacles - but, damn, it does look good though.

The off-road has features you actually need, or may need. the sport is all fluff. Do a little bit of research and you can make your decision.

Off-road because you can add the sport stuff to it, but not the other way around.

I can say the locker makes a HUGE difference off road.

Have you tried searching? There is a thread posted about this weekly, or you could go to www.toyota.com and see the differences yourself...

Either way it depends what you are going to do with it, most have no use for the locker (but they will say they use and need it many times...) so unless you are going hardcore off roading it won't be beneficial. Features are similar, the OR rides a little smoother but handles worse (IE more body roll). Seriously, just seach it has been beat to death and each person is different. If you are concerened with your image and aren't honestly going to OR much then go with the OR like many and try to justify to everyone. If you aren't concerened with your image and you like the looks of the sport with the lower maintenance and better looking painted parts (except the hood I personally am not a fan of) get the sport, it will be more than plenty capable for fairly extreme wheeling.

As someone else said if you are just going to start upgrading stuff like wheels, shocks, tires, ect then a sport is probably better, but it all depends on how you are seriously going to use it. BTW, crawl control isn't some magic wand, it is mostly fluff.

Again, search the info is out there!
