How good is the TRD Sport on off roading?

Just curious how good will the TRD Sport be if it’s taken off roading? Were planning to do some light off roading in 2 weeks in Anza Borrego with our TRD Sport. Anyone have taken their TRD Sport there before? Should i be concern with the stock suspension given out? Just put some KO2 on them, dont want any surprise since its our only car. Any input is appreciated!

Comparing the sport to the offroad isnt the sames as driving a corolla into the woods.. 95% of the truck is the same.

 

I had a 2016 Sport 4x4. All I did was put AT tires on it and I was stunned by what it could do. I’d swap out the front tow hook for an OR one, but you’ll be good to go.

You will be fine, decent tires and proper lines will get you a ton of places. I am a 2wd sr5 and do lots of stupid shit.
Indian truck trail, holy him and Santiago canyon are right in your back yard.

If you're 4x4 you should have no problem going wherever a TRD Off-Road goes, save for a situation where you are with 1 wheel off the ground completely in the rear, then the locker of a TRD Off-Road will help.
But the TRD Sport "limited slip" works pretty well.
Hell, I'm RWD TRD Sport and throttle it through many 4x4 places with careful line choices and enough momentum. Hills and super soft stuff is what gets me.

 

Tacomas are very capable period.

You bought the right truck. Flex its legs and have fun.

 

You'll be a ok with 4x4. The yota is naturally a good off road truck. The KO2's were the best move, as an aggressive and tough all terrain tire is going to be your saving grace off the pavement - just remember to air down if your traction needs improvement.

 

I've done some pretty tough off roading and never used a locker. Ever.

I'm sure people have done much harder more often but most people will never use a locker and other then that and some gimmicky crawl control features, the truck is basically the same. The tires on the off road are shit for grip.

Save some money and get an Sr or sr5 if you want more features. The mod to your standard.

You can find a lot off TRD Off Road take-offs in the marketplace and on Craigslist. They go for cheap. You could probably throw those on your sport and make it even better for off-roading. Frankly, I wish I had gone that route.

 

I drove out in Anza borrego in the washes "Fonts point" and "Inspiration wash" with no problem when I first got my TRD sport. I was running a 3 inch procomp spacer in the front and 1 inch block rear with 285/75/17 wheels. The ride was fine honestly and never got stuck. I also like to take my Wrangler out there too but that's another story. I think you should be fine. Just don't go too far outside the main paths in the softer sand. Unless you have recovery boards and air down. Below is a screenshot of an old post I made of me out in Anza borrego.

I’ve had mine all over Arizona. Dirt, rocks, sand, mud, steep, narrow, ruts, roads, trails, and “I don’t know what this is”. The truck has been willing to go places that I was second guessing. You’ll be fine.


I only got “stuck” once when I put this big bastard under my truck, between the axels. Had to have help getting past it.

 

lol. You arent doing anything but moderate off roading if you haven't ever needed a locker.

Also, don't make the claim that the tires on the OR are shit until you've been off road with them. They do surprisingly well for a stock tire.
