Thank you both for the input. Deer Valley is one of my favorite trails and I've been closely following the forest service's scoping and analysis project. This trail should not have been closed in the first place (both meadows met the guidelines) and it is great to have it back open.

I was a bit worried it had been dug up by the 37" tire crowd, but it sounds like it is in reasonable condition with the exception of some rocks in the middle of the trail. I've run this trail multiple times in my old ZJ, and I'm curious to see how the 4Runner will do. I'm sure there will be some clutch smoke. :)

Also, Deer Valley is officially open as of this time.

Actually I might be interested in doing it tomorrow. I’ll have to check with my wife.

I’d like to do both deer valley and slick rock. As a day trip.

Edit. I’m game if anyone is interested.

Kind of last minute I know.

Handheld but you can get a rooftop antenna setup, 12V adapters etc. I think the link I posted shows the $50 entry pack with all the attachments. HAM is definitely a step up from CB and worth looking into.

No doubt Chinese, but for an entry level unit it's a good start. The SoCal group is using the hell out of them for all our runs and they work like a champ.

Both. Each has it's place for me.

Ham for off road stuff with buddies who also run on Ham, ability to hit repeaters and summon help in 'no cell service areas', ability to use the 2M as a scanner for local public safety stuff.

CB for trips on the highway, local stuff, messing around.

Ham is much more advanced, better transmission quality, better range, more etiquette, less BS. Licensing keeps out the shitheads.

CB is more low-brow, lots of mouth breathers because of no licensing requirements and the relative cheapness of radios and antennas, but still useful.

I have a Icom dual band ham and a President CB.

If you (or anyone else on here) wants, I have 2 CB antennas which work fine but which I doubt I will keep. Local pickup - 2 Wilson Little Wil magnet mounts, $15 each.

You are pretty far north from me, but maybe on the antenna. I'll be looking into the ham radio more, it's apparent it's the superior of the two options.

What bad ass N.F you guys have. I went up hwy 88 and out Omo Ranch rd lots of good camping and trails out there.

Day 2 went up Lower Bear Res. Great scenery up that way. Made a giant loop back to Cook's Station for some sweet grub.
Fyi Panther Creek rd is still closed but Ellis Creek Rd is open.

Andy, I would love to know of the lake in the Emigrant Wilderness as I backpack there a lot. I am a catch and release Fly fisher for the most part but love a good Brookie by the fire every trip or two.

Anyone have suggestions on routes/trails for mammoth lake area. Planning to do a trip to mono lake, bodie, laurel lake and Crowley lake. Be good to know if there are Any trails that connects them all without using the main highway.

Went from 3rd Gen Taco to 3GT4R to 2nd Gen Taco and finally a V8 4GT4R.
Check the off roading forum. There’s a trip planned for laurel lakes and people there have went all over.

Lots of dirt/gravel roads North, South, and East of Bodie, going in and out. You don't need to use the 'tourist' entrance for Bodie off of 395. Check the FS maps.

One of those roads leads to the ghost town of Aurora (on the Nevada side), where there's an active gold mine, and cemetary.
From there, you could travel north-east to Hawthorne, or north to Yerington, or return back to Bodie.

You'll need good offroad maps, or a GPS that has all those roads.
