i thought that when you pulled the parking brake it would turn off the drls, might be able to tap into that wire with a switch of some sort. i dont remember for sure, i hated mine always being on and just unpinned it from the connector under the dash.

I added a switch for mine - as I recall, I found the wire in the engine compartment (up by the battery), cut it, and ran (extended) it directly to/through a switch that I installed in my dash next to the cabin dimmer. Wiring diagram attached. I can do exploratory digging if necessary.

ebrake only disables the lights coming on from ignition off. If the lights are already on, then ebrake does NOT turn them off; only turning off the ignition, engaging the ebrake and turning the ignition on again will leave them off (as I read it). From the PDF wiring diagram (bold mine):

    1. DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT OPERATION When the engine is started, voltage generated at TERMINAL L of the generator is applied to TERMINAL 11 of the daytime running light relay (Main).

If the parking brake lever is pulled up (The parking brake SW on) at this time, the relay is not activated, so the daytime running light system does not operate. If the parking brake lever is then released (The parking brake SW off), a signal is input to TERMINAL 8 of the relay. This activates the relay, so current flows from battery to the HEAD relay (Point side) to TERMINAL 4 of the DIMMER relay to TERMINAL 1 to HEAD (LO LH), (LO RH) fuse to TERMINAL 1 of the headlights to TERMINAL 3 to TERMINAL 1 of the daytime running light resistor to TERMINAL 2 to GROUND. This causes headlights to light up (Headlights light up dimmer than full brightness.).

Once the daytime running light system operates and headlights light up, headlights remain on even if the parking brake lever is pulled up (The parking brake SW on).

If the engine stalls and the ignition SW remains on, headlights remain lighted up even through current is no longer output from TERMINAL L of the generator. If the ignition SW is then turned off, the headlights go off. If the engine is started with the parking brake lever released (The parking brake SW off), the daytime running light system operates and headlights light up when the engine starts.

Was doing some work tonight on my 2015 Tacoma PreRunner 4.0 when I noticed my DRLs were not coming on. I used the continuity circuit on a Sears VOM with an audible setting to test every fuse in the truck - under the hood - under the dash. The truck has no mods. With the stalk in the 1st position - DRL - I had no Daytime Running Lights(DRLs).
If I turned to the stalk to the 2nd position - I had DRLs and parking lights - 3rd position - headlights, parking lights and DRLs/etc.
Started thinking bad stalk as I had to replace one of these on an Isuzu Rodeo back when.
Then I came here and wahlah...
My parking brake was on. Deactivated the parking brake and the DRLs work. I never noticed this as I only use the 1st position on the stalk(DRL) during the day when you would not necessarily notice whether or not the DRLs were on.

I wonder if since this is the 1st gen section that the DRL's are different in 1st gen Tacomas compared to your Tacoma?

Googling this I found there were other makes of vehicles that behave the way my 2nd Gen PreRunner does.
