Frame rust recall

There's a ton of info to sift through online for the frame rust issue. Hard to sift through, If it was may truck - I'd immediately drive it to the best dealer in your area, Tell the dealer you're afraid to drive it until they inspect it for frame worthiness. Leave it if necessary - then see what they find. At that point they are responsible to be sure the vehicle safe to drive ..... Then follow through as the results are known ...

 

I just purchased a 2015 Tacoma TRD Off Road and was reading about the lawsuit and rust problems 2nd gens are having. The one question I have is, why are the frames rusting so badly? Do I have anything to worry about with my 2015 Tacoma, it was purchased from AZ 1 owner 23K on it.

 

These are the worst areas i could find on my 07’, scheduled for inspection in a few weeks. Think i can get a new frame?

 

Very similar to my 06 and I was approved for a new one back in September. Still waiting for all of the parts to come in.

 

Damn, I got approved on October 11 and got my truck back October 31

 

Is the salt that is put down on the hwy the reason for the mass amount of rust on the frames? Should I be worried with my 2015?

 

Yes, partially, and no.

Yes the salt contributed to the corrosion but manufacturing issues were more of an issue. The problem seems isolated to later 90's through 2010. At least I haven't heard on any newer trucks with issues, and the latest warranty extension for Tacomas (older tacomas, tundras and 4runners were also affected) is for trucks in the 2005 through 2010 model years.

Your new truck in North Carolina will almost certainly have no problems. If you really worry, have some rust-proofing done. Many people here seem to like Fluid Film (I've never used it) for DIY application or POR 15 (more difficult application, and I've never used it either), but there are also businesses that do this (Zeibart is one, again I've never used them, and I doubt there are any franchises as far south as the Carolinas).

 

I soaked my 2013 with 3-4 cans of fluid film in the fall. It's a mess, but get it everywhere and it will soak into cracks and crevices real good. Then each following fall I power wash the underside and reapply maybe 1.5 - 2 cans for winter protection. I power wash it again in the spring after the last road salt is washed away by a good rain. So far so good, and I live in Ohio.

 

Anybody have their frame replaced in the Virginia Beach area? Any dealers more or leniant than others?

 

I finally got my recall letter this week, 12 years and 23 DAYS from the date of first use. How convenient.
It appears that I still have until may of 2018 to take it in for inspection, the anniversary of the court decision. Is this correct??

I did not think my frame had a problem but I went out and started tapping around with a hammer and sure enough, there are two small holes at the bottom of the boxed section about an inch apart. A good smack of the hammer will make a nice sized hole. I could hear many soft spots while tapping around on the frame.
I spent alot of time, effort, and money keeping this from happening. Lots of fluid film over the years did nothing but slow it down.

I was thinking about waiting until road salt season is over. Maybe march/april. That way I don't get my new frame all salty!
Maybe more holes will show up by then.

 

I just got my letter in the mail yesterday and got under the truck today to look. What do y'all think, pass or fail? The drain hole on the drivers side is a square and my pointer finger fits just past the finger nail. On the passenger side it's a ragged hole that my entire finger can fit into up to the base. The frame rails on that side are also separating a fair amount.

 

Doesnt seem that bad to me, the perforation needs to be larger than 10mm if you are worried the dealer can inspect the truck

 

Long time info-searcher-lurker. First post. Feels good to be here.
Took my 09 to the dealer yesterday for inspection. When I initially made the appointment I was greeted with a total arms length, “we don’t really feel like talking about this” kind of vibe.
Called my name out in the waiting area and announced out loud before I approached the desk that I was, “All Clean!”. Desk guy wouldn’t provide me with details.
Was placed on the undercoating list.
Is that it for my VIN’s recall?
I KNOW they’re not just going to offer to put a new frame under it.
I naively didn’t do my own inspection prior.
My question is if I feel uncomfortable with it, can I take it to another dealer for another inspection?

 

From my understanding you can continue to have it inspected for up to 12 years from original date of purchase.

 

I would definitely look around and go to a different dealer. Maybe wait until spring and have it reinspected, and look under it yourself first.

Is there a time limit on how long you have to own the truck before they will do the recall ?

 

Took my 06 Tacoma to dealership for inspection, before they ever pulled it into the inspection station they told me to expect to pay 1500 to 2500 out of pocket or go to war with Toyota. I had a bad feeling then but went ahead and let them inspect it and told them that I was not going to pay any money out of my pocket, so once the inspected, they came back and told me it failed and I told them again I wouldn't pay for anything that was related to the frame replacement or damaged by the replacement. They gave me the phone number to call Toyota and I left. Set up another inspection with another dealer that couldn't understand why they told me that it would cost me out of pocket right up front and said he would research it. I am going there this afternoon for them to inspect and was told by SM that they would not put any parts on there that would cost me unless I was advised first. So lets see how this goes
