    Hey Guys,

I live in Virginia and I am in the market for a 2017 taco. Here is some information about the one that I looked at the dealer today. It is a 2017 tacoma SR5 4x4 double cab. It has a base price of $33,220.00

Here is the optional equipment: V6 tow package of ($650)

With the delivery fee of $995. The total sticker price comes to $35.073.00

The dealer offerd me $32K + $3K closing fees with a total walk out of the door price of $35K.

Any idea how I can get an even better price?

Furthermore, with all the recalls for the 2017 models, should I be wary about purchasing a 2017 model?

Really appreciate any advice y'all can give.

    Thank You

Expand your search to multiple dealers in your area and negotiate. Tell them you doing this and they will start to negotiate with you. tell them all the things another dealer has that their car may not for the same price (ie it’s a TRD off-road vs a sr5, or a ‘better color’)

Feel comfortable walking away from a bad deal.

Expand your search beyond Virginia. I’ve had good luck hunting cars in Ohio.

Include used cars in the search if you are willing to go used.

Try TrueCar.com or cargurus.com. They will tell you if you are getting a decent deal.

I picked up a used 2017 limited double cab short bed in white with 20k miles for just under 32k. It was not the first color I wanted. It was not the trim I needed. It was not in my city (fine by me after Hurricane Harvey) It was however, fully loaded, included extra accessories, ext warranty, clearly babied by its last owner, and the price I was willing to pay for it.

Couldn't agree more with the idea of shopping around. They'll want your business on the truck, and will end up doing whatever they can to help get you to shop with them. When I was looking for a Tacoma, I had been looking with 4-5 different dealerships, and boy did it make them work for my deal lol. In the end, you have to be happy! Make them work for you, and get the truck you want. The deals will come with your pressure of shopping around.

$3K in "closing fees"?? Is that sales tax, or something else?

Is say shop around. Get quotes through websites like Edmunds.com, or other similar sites. Call and email around too. My best deal came through Edmunds, and I got "fleet" pricing.

Just don't come to PA to shop, no negotiation at all, at least in PGH area I wasn't able to budge them.

That price is too high! Price it out on True Car to see what you should get it for. I paid $35 K for my off road with tech package which was just at $2K off MSRP.

If you belong to Costco use the car buying thing they have. My dealer beat it but it gave me a good price to start. In addition it gives you a coupon for 50% off accessories (max 200 value). More than enough paid for membership.
    - and don’t be scared to walk out the door!

Btw I paid 31400 for a 2017 2wd trdor with tech and towing package

Join Costco!!!! Too much. That is the price for a TRDversion. Or go kbb.com build, request quotes from 3 dealers, do it multiple time to get more dealers.

Where in Virginia? Not that I know from experience, but willing to travel will count.

I just bought a 2017 SR5 V6 Access cab last month in SC. For reference, my sticker including destination charge was 31,097. I ended up paying 26,608 plus taxes and fees for 27,500 OTD ( our sales tax is capped in SC at $500).

I did all my negotiating on the internet and over the phone. I searched dealers in an area that I was willing to drive to get a truck (2 hours), then I asked them for their best price. A friend of mine bought one last year for 85% of MSRP and I felt he got a good deal, so that was my goal. After they gave me the best price, I gave them a price of $1000 below my goal price and ended the conversation. Some dealers would call me back, others wouldn't. I ended up getting 2 dealers offering similar prices so then I pitted them against each other to squeeze another couple of hundred out of them. In the end I had 2 dealers offering prices within $100 of each other, so I went with the truck I liked better and drove 2 hours to get it.

I was not in a rush. My old truck ran fine, so I had time on my side. I contacted at least 6 or 7 dealers. I never let a dealer know I really liked the truck they had in stock, there was always something I didn't like (color, interior trim, wheels, etc) but for the right price I could live with it. I also told them I was seriously considering the Frontier. I think this was important because the Frontier is priced considerably lower than the Taco. I contacted a Nissan dealer and got a price quote on a similarly equipped Frontier so I could use it against the Toyota dealers.

I found some dealers who wouldn't budge and some who would come way off from the start. I even had one dealer tell me to go buy the truck from the other dealer at the price I quoted.
The best information I had was the price my friend paid. It was a better price than any of the online pricing guides (like USAA), but I'm not a member of Costco. It became a competition to see if I could get a better price than he did!

    @taco_newb

Too many people show up and say I paid $x, did I get a good deal? I have no clue why they ask, it's too late............

Congratulations on being smart enough to do your research in advance. :hattip:

Remember this. Instant gratification is the biggest reason most folks pay too much. It does take work to find the best value. I'm not speaking of squeezing the last dime, just a reasonably good deal.

As far as the idea of buying a '17. My recommendation is to take a long test drive. Different terrain. Highway/cruise, town, etc. It has to be long enough to experience the characteristics of the transmission and the comfort of the seats, the two biggest single complaints around here. AND this must be done on the specific truck you are looking to buy, as transmissions apparently vary in their nature. IE some folks think they are fine, some folks think they are satan's mechanical spawn.

Like everyone said use multiple dealers to get your best price and stay away from dealers in nj. I had to really work hard to get a good deal on mine.

Hey there, I am also in VA and I literally just went through this process last week. This was my first new car purchase ever (upgraded from an 05' RAV4) and had been saving up for quite awhile to get this bad boy. I decided to just go with the Double Cab 4x4 SR trim level, and all said and done I walked out with full closing costs after taxes and all the other crap at 29k. Got a ton of online quotes from different places and made a handful of phone calls before just spending a full day jumping to a couple different dealers. I went in to the Dealer basically telling them that I want a used 2016 because of budget, knowing full well that they would try and convince to buy new which I was planning on all along. I'm stoked with my new truck though and think 29k was pretty decent for brand new, and this was in the the Northern VA area where everything seems to be more expensive. Hope this is a nice reference for ya though and best of luck!

Don’t know where the OP is at in Va but I bought my TRD Sport DCSB for about $33,000.00 OTD at Shelor in Christianburg last year. They’re pretty good to deal with too.
