2017 Double Cab Audio Build

This forum has been so helpful with many questions I have had about my Tacoma. After being a long time lurker and never a contributor, I have decided to give back to the community. Wanted to share my latest project of the aftermarket stereo rebuild I'm doing. I'm still not done yet and have lots to do, but hopefully this will help others.

Here's a breakdown of my system:

Headunit: Pioneer AVH-X5800BHS
(These next items are must haves to retain steering wheel control, AUX extension and factory USB ports. They were all super easy to set up and worked on the first try.)

Things to do include making trim pieces around the equipment, wrapping all of the wire, replacing the battery posts with higher quality ones.

Also I still have not mounted the 3.5" mids. They are going to go in the A pillars so stay tuned for those. Hoping to do that this weekend.

I did add sound deadner to the entire rear deck and back panel, this pic was a test fit and forgot to take another pic after doing so. Still need to add trim pieces to the area just for appearances and fix the wiring. I don't like how loose it looks.

Subwoofer mounted in a 0.94 cu ft (after speaker displacement) sealed box. Wrapped the box and the amp panel in vinyl.

Lots of hot glue to hold the tweet in place.

Stinger Road Kill sound deadner added to both the outer and inner skins of the doors.

Tweet mounted in the sail panel and 6.5's mounted in factory location.

Had to grind off the rivets to the child seat tie downs to make room for the sub and amp rack:

Bass knob mounted...though I am thinking about moving it. I do want a light bar and want the switch to be there. Since I do not have 4 wheel drive I have lots of space in the overhead console. Might move the bass knob there.

Rockford Fosgate 200 AMP breaker.

 

Made progress on the trim pieces around the amps. Still want to add some to the top of the sub box just to look cleaner. Getting there!

Also had to remove the plastic back of the seat on the rear passenger side. The subwoofer extension was hitting it. By removing it I gained about 1/2" worth of room back there.

 

Looks good man extremely similar to what I did in my 15, why the single ten over a 13.5 jl?

 

Strictly a brand preference. Absolutely nothing wrong with the JL, I am just familiar with Image Dynamics and like their sound. Honestly I was scared to death it wouldn't fit. I did a happy dance when I slid it in and it seated all the way. Magnet missing the back of the box by about 1/6"!

 

I'm going the same route. How does the IDQ sound?

 

I really like it. I'm a rock and metal kind of guy so it provides the punchiness I am looking for. Smooth transition from sub to 6.5" on the bass guitar. Not into rap or techno so not sure how it would hit with a more boominess type of music. My box is only 1 cu ft and this seems to have a sweet spot about there.

Hey! Quick question, I have an 06, double cab. Would that same box your using fit in my back seat or does the new tacos have a deeper pocket or different dimensions?

 

Looks great man. I am looking into doing something similar to my Tacoma. Did you make the box yourself or did you purchase it somewhere?

 

I'm sorry I don't know if it would fit a 2006. Another consideration is the vent's in the back wall for the 2016+. Not sure if 2006 had those or not. It does fit my 2017...its tight, but it fits.

 

I built it myself. Made it out of 1/2" birch. I wanted 3/4" thick, but it would not have given me the near 1cu ft of internal volume needed. The box is sealed and comes out to 0.94 cu ft after removing for speaker displacement. Here are the internal dimensions I used for my box. Remember to add 1/2" to all sides for external dimensions. Oh and I had to remove the plastic back seat cover to allow for the subwoofer extension.

I cant fond the bass control that goes in factory light switch spot where did u find it or did u alter it?

 

Made it myself. I took the factory blank that was already in the dash and popped it out. Then just drilled a hole in the center of it the same size as the bass knob shaft. Even after tightening it down it still had a little wiggle so I hot glued the bass knob assembly to the back of the factory blank. Once I snapped the factory blank back into place and put the bass knob back on it looks factory.

 

Did the bass knob come in an assembled box that you had to take apart to get just the dial out or did you buy just a dial? The only ones i find online come in small enclosures

 

Great question. I used the factory bass knob form Arc Audio. Yes, the Arc Audio bass knobs, along with many others comes in a small closed "box". But nearly everyone I have seen can be dissembled exposing the bare circuit board. I took the knob off (it has a small set screw in it), then disassembled the box revealing the small circuit board. Then hot glued the circuit board to the back side of the factor blank after poking the bass knob shaft through the hole I drilled. Here's a pic that may explain better:

 

Wow I wish I knew how to do all this stuff. About all I feel comfortable with is replacing the door speakers but wiring amps and subs is out of my comfort zone lol. Especially since my truck is only a couple months old.

Oh and OP, what are some of your favorite metal bands?

 

Yeah I totally get that. Brand new truck and talking about cutting holes in it.

Some of my favorite bands are Savatage, Maiden, Helloween, Halford, Megadeth, and of course... Motorhead.

 

Yeah I didn't even feel brave enough to do the speakers until a few days ago after I read through some threads on here and watched a few videos. I ordered new tweeters, and 4 new door speakers with some Noico sound deadening stuff. And I got a trim removing tool kit so I think that will help a lot.

Ok, so you like more of the older/classic metal stuff. I like the bands you listed but I also listen to a lot of the newer underground stuff
