Taking my nephews out to the Great Salt Plains park in a week to dig for crystals. Any other places we should check out while up in that neck of the woods? Coming from DFW Texas.

Did you ever go? My 6 year old is fascinated with rocks and such, and my wife has suggested we go out there. I had never heard of it before she said something about it.

It’s definitely a very interesting place. The weekend we headed out, a serious cold front moved through. The weather was very cold but worse was the rain. We dug a little bit until we were too cold. Crystals were practically on the top of the soil so we didn’t have to dig very much! Larger crystals are found farther down though. The ones we brought home were very small, size of quarters, half-dollars etc. We stayed in a cabin at the state park located on the other side of the lake. Several other attractions within hours drive that we checked out; Alabaster Caverns was cool.

Take aways- don’t go if it’s cold because you will get damp from digging; bring change of clothes at dig site; digging tools, buckets etc; egg cartons or other means to hold crystals and allow them to dry, kind of brittle when wet.
