I've been a certified motorcycle tech(honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha) for 9 years now so i have a little bit of kowledge on this subject. The Yamaha Virago 250(now v-star 250) and the honda rebel 250 are great beginner bikes but are very small and underpowered. I would highly recommend the Honda Shadow VT600(vlx600). It's a normal sized bike that is really well ballanced and has enough power that you won't be looking to sell it 1000 miles later. The Yamaha v-star 650 is a really good bike as well but the maintenance is kind of a pain. Every 4000 miles the valves have to be adjusted and that starts to take a chunk out of you wallet.

I took an MSF class last summer and rode a rebel...pretty nice to ride in an empty parking lot, lol.

I just bought a Ninja 250 last month, and stumbled on this website:

    http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/New_Riders

Some VERY useful info there, regardless if you're a ninja rider or not. I think my 250 has PLENTY of power and I'll probably keep it for over a year. But this is coming from the guy with a 4 cylinder 4WD Tacoma.

I would look at the XR1200 sporty as well. Best handling sportster ever made.

Much safer to start on, imho. Most of the time it's dumb assholes texting who kill bikers. When you're on the dirt, most of the time you're safe.

For sure stay away from the Rebel. My first bike was the Shadow 750, which i thought was a great beginner bike, but that really all depends on the ability you have. 3 months later i upgraded to a VTX1800 and never looked back. I took the MSF course after 6 months of riding. Highly recomended. Enjoy

You don't have to but this really is great advice. Dirtbike/motoX experience teaches you a lot about motorcycles.
