    Things to check first ...

check to see that the compressor is turning.
does the AC light illuminate, if not check the fuse.

You got bad advice if that's the first thing they recommended. Is the compressor engaging at all? If not, find out why. It could very well be caused by a leaking evaporator (my a/c discharge issue was) but there are way more things to check first before going down that road. Is the refrigerant low? Gone completely? If not, it ain't the evap core. If it is low or gone, get a qualified tech to do a sniff check and see where it's escaping. Could be anywhere and most things are easier and less expensive to change than an evap core (although the evap core job is NOT difficult).
