Has anyone ever but bigger front brakes on a 5lug? Seems like there would be something out there on a different vehicle that would be a direct swap or maybe an aftermarket kit. Discuss.

I think there is probably an OEM option. I'm guessing these 5 lug hubs have parts that are compatible with other Toyota vehicles. I have been meaning to cross reference some part numbers.

Look at what is going on with the 2nd Gen X-Runner front end. It's the 5-lug chassis, most of the 5-lug suspension, 5-lug wheels... but running 17's and 18's OEM.

I've seen reference to BBK's being available for the X-Runner - one example i just called up. Looks the part to me, just got to figure out what's gotta be stirred about in the Toyota mix and match parts-bin in order to make them work for our trucks.. you ain't gonna be running 15's, I know that much...

That is not the kind of brake upgrade I would be interested in!

There is probably an oem brake upgrade that could be done with junkyard parts. Since these tacos use a 5x114.3 pattern and have a car-like wheel offset I have a suspicion that Toyota may have used a hub that's the same or similar to a Camry, rav4, highlander, or something.

I think the Lexus RX shares the same hub/bearing assembly with the 5-lug. The bolt pattern is the same for sure. I was trying to cross reference part numbers on my phone and I am reasonably sure that I read that.

In the Honda world there is an OEM/junkyard upgrade for almost all cars. There are only 3-4 different caliper brackets which creates a lot of compatibility.

I have been thinking more about this. (I tend to obsess over problems until I have explored all possibilities)

Supra, GS400, LS400, SC400, IS 300 ect may be possible sources. I found a RAV4 forum where a guy bolted on IS300 calipers.

LS400's are 4 piston also. Lots of dual piston options as well.

There are a few at the junkyard. I may grab a caliper this weekend and test fit it.

Hmm...got me thinking about test fitting the 18x7 +55 rims from my mazdaspeed6. They are 5x114.3. Not sure about hub size though.

Surely there is a simple brake upgrade out there, someone just hasn't stumbled upon it yet. Example, back to mazdaspeed6, some Evo brakes are a near perfect fit. Caliper bolt spacing is only 0.5mm difference. Nothing a little grinding of the bracket can't solve. I believe the rest of the install is straight forward bolt-on. There's got to be something like that for us 5-Lugers.

This is exactly what I am talking about. When it's time for a brake job I will be looking as some Lexus brakes. I know Highlander guys use GS400 brakes for a bolt on upgrade.

I think I might take a trip to the local pick and pull and see what I can pull off and fit. I like the idea of using Lexus brakes.

There's a guy on the X-Runner owners FB group selling carrier brackets to run Tundra calipers with LS430 rotors, that's what I'm slapping on my XR as soon as I get around to doing the rest of my electrical mods.

The most common legit reason for bigger brakes is trying to solve brake fade............

Of course brake fade is from overheating. Most of the time that's caused by some form of driver error, not inadequate brake size. So the first question is what is being done wrong? Over driving? Over loading? Improperly serviced system? Or are the pads wrong for the application? Or is the fluid wrong for the application? And if the fluid has been boiled the only cure is fluid replacement.

Once the brakes are locked or ABS kicked in the tires are what does the stopping. Seen lots of folks 'upgrade' brakes and still stop long. Tires wrong size, wrong compound, wrong tread for the surface, lack of grip from lousy suspension, etc.

As an example, Miata spec racers run stock rotors and one pot calipers. They are allowed up upgrade pads and fluid. They race hard and stop just fine on minuscule brakes. But they are meticulously maintained.

Nothing wrong with making the effort to go to bigger brakes. Just important to understand why, and alternatives.

I don't know how much it plagues the guys with offroad rigs, though I imagine the stopping effort is higher with all that added weight and ridiculous tire size. The stock system faded on me pretty badly the first time I went for a spirited jaunt through the back roads. I wasn't even driving hard since it was night time and a new route for me. I was going 50mph and could smell the front brakes, the auto-LSD light started flashing at me and I had to stop to cool them off for a bit. Am I over-driving the truck? Yeah absolutely, but that's what I bought it to do.

I just need it to compensate for the added weight and tires. My brakes never seemed to be an issue when I was driving my street truck.

I don't have issues with this - and i am carrying a significant amount of weight in add-ons, over stock. I did, however, put more performance oriented pads into the front end at around the same time that those add-ons were going on.

That said, mine is 90% highway miles - no significant slope/grade angles in terms of elevation to be braking on, to overheat things.

It's just called X-Runner Owners, theres several, it's the largest one. The guy is currently out but has another set coming. He also has brackets for other brakes, but I haven't looked into them since I've got mine already.

    IMG_20171026_224411.jpg
$200 for the brackets, $80/ea for reman calipers, then just pads, rotors and lines and you're done. Pretty good bargain for a BBK IMO.
