Well guys and gals the 2.7 may be on its last leg. Oil consumption has gone from 1 quart for every 1000 miles to 1.5 quarts for every 600 miles. Even a mix of 5W-40 Rotella T6 was not strong enough to keep the oil consumption down to acceptable rates. I have 2 small seeps and now a 3rd on the rear main seal. Thinking ring pack may be stuck or failing/damaged. A lab sample will be going out after 1000 miles to see what is in my oil.

Any guesses where the oil could be going or getting consumed?
PCV is new as are several vacuum lines. Compression test a few months ago showed all 4 to be acceptable even with the throttle plate closed. No drips of oil anywhere under the truck.
Oil currently in the engine is Mobil 1 Syn 0W-40 (just a touch thicker than 5W-30).

Any places to look would be appreciated.

    Any other ideas?

All I can think of is a stuck or damaged ring pack or valve guide seals all tore up.

No smoke as far as I can see. The tail pipe does have oily heavy black soot around it. So that's why I'm thinking valve guide seals or a ring pack. Ring pack is possible since more seals are starting to leak but the engine still holds a good vacuum.

May be doing a leak down test soon. Unfortunately don't have the tester so I'm going to find a trust worthy guy to take care of the test.

Following. I'm now adding about 3 quarts throughout the oil change cycle. No evidence of a leak, and haven't seen any oil smoke in the exhaust, but when I drive up a mountain to a particular job site, I can smell burning oil when I get out of the truck. That could be from a leak onto the hot block, though.

That's pretty much what I suspect. I never figured these motors would be prone to a leaky rear seal, but it's the best guess I've been able to come up with

So far I cut my oil filter open on the Tacoma and no metal flakes or debris within the filter. So that's a positive note. Now to find where the oil is really going. I need a leak down test to be done.

If your engine block or bell housing are getting hot enough to burn motor oil, your problems are more serious than just an oil leak.

How long has it been since your last oil & filter change? Have you checked for a leak around the oil filter? No problems with these motors that I am aware of, at least none that would cause oil to simply disappear. Your engine might be burning small amounts of oil that could add up to large amounts if you don't check the level frequently. You should check the oil level every 2 fuel-ups if everything is tight -- check it more often if you have oiling issues.

Oil consumption or a severe leak are the only 2 things to cause that kind of oil loss within 5k miles.

Also 5W-30 is the Toyota USA recommendation. I run 0W-40 which is just a touch thicker. 10W-30 will be much thicker at cold temps than a 5W-30.

You figure it out yet? I just started experiencing similar problems.

Unfortunately I have not. The consumption is at a steady 1 quart per 900 miles at this point running 0W-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic.

I had a 87 toyota van .with the 4y engine 4cyl. and it used 1 qt per 100 miles and I had to change to spark plugs every week. it had bad oil seals on the pistons. the compression rings were good but the seals were bad. I drove it for 6 years like that . just bought the cheapest 20w-50 I could find and cheapest plugs. eventually I had to put it to rest cause I wore out the spark plug threads and couldn't change them any more but it keep on going.

The owners manual in mine says 1 qt per 600 miles is acceptable. I'm at 189,000 miles and so far never add oil except when I change oil. At 5000 miles after the last oil change I might be 1/2 qt. low. If I were using 1 qt every 600-1000 miles I might be concerned, but I'd keep driving it and just add oil until it got worse. Might get a lot of years out of it that way.
