This weekend I noticed my rear diff is wet at the carrier gasket interface. It's not dripping yet. It's a 2005 with 101k. How worried should I be about this? I plan on making sure the nuts are tight and monitoring it.

Update: the nuts wouldn't get any tighter with a standard 14 mm combo wrench. Also, the wet looking area doesn't even feel oily, but I'm sure oil is seeping from that joint.

Are you mechanically inclined? Pulling the rear isn't too hard, so this could be a good opportunity to install a new gasket.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I've done all the preventative maintenance since it was new.

I'm more worried about the time involved in replacing the gasket. The write ups for removing the third member make it seem pretty involved. This is my daily driver and I've got three little kids so time in the garage is limited.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless the spot just bothers you.
Check your fluid level every couple of weeks for a few months. That looks like a pretty small leak.
I'd bet you won't notice much if any loss over the course of several months.

Nah, not a big deal. Worst case is you just change your differential oil more often to make sure there’s a proper amount in there.

I have an 06, and mine is now doing the same thing, except I am leaking a tiny bit, leaving spots (not a puddle) on the ground. How easy is this to do? Drain differential oi, drop driveshaft, pull off pinion and seal, remove bolts for case, putt front of case off, pull gasket and clean, install new gasket, put front of case back on, install new pinion seal, install pinion, install drive shaft? Is that it? Anything I am missing?
