I just built a work bench out of scrap wood and an old bed frame. I'll post a pic in the morning.

If he has that much scrap wood from cut offs I would look at a local HS. They could easily mill some of them to turn into turning blanks (Pens, bowls, legs, end grain cutting boards, etc) or as suggested earlier maybe a pellet making shop. If I was closer, I would see about getting some for my shop projects.

You can build some very cool stuff out of scrap wood. I own a cabinet shop and we make a lot of scrap wood. I also hate just burning it in a open burn barrel like most of the shops around here do. We try to use as much as we can and I also let my guys have access to the scrap piles for personal projects as long as I can bill out the main piece to cover the cost, more important on plywood sheets then hardwood. Since I started doing that we've gone from burning once a week to maybe once every 6 weeks.

I think its up in new Hampshire that they have a scrap wood fired power plant. they take trailer loads of wood chips and junk and burn it to boil some water. Not close enough to help you out though.

Beech maple and alder all have some uses in the barbecue pit. Sixteen inch long pieces of 1x whatever.

I have alder coming out my ears, but i would buy a couple usps flat rate boxes of beech.
