This is not true, you can service your own vehicle and maintain your warranty.

Thanks all! I will take it in to toyota and accompany the "tech" on a test drive so that we can see how "normal" it is. It will be documented at least.

I will start to look into reputable diff/drive shops in the area.

We have same truck. It definitely lets you know if you mess up shifting. 20k miles now and we both shift it like butter 99% of time now. Drive it!

When my MT was very new it was a little choppy, clunky and stiff. I'm at 13k or so now and it's smoothed out nicely. I do have the noisy rear diff but - it's a thing either Toyota or I will deal with when it's a real problem (by real I mean broken). I have fixed it by turning the radio up a little :)

I'm not sure whether this applies to the 4 cyl 5sp but the V6 ^MT has some unconventionally slow throttle response combined with a heavy flywheel and at low RPMs it's a little finicky to be smooth until you get used to it. It helps to give it a good bit of extra blip and time on downshifts to match revs.

So, legit question, would you guys recommend the 3rd gen?

I had a 2nd gen and it was fine. The price difference between a new 3rd gen, and a used low mile 2nd gen can be somthing like 5k. I hate the 2nd gen interior. I like the third gen, but I keep seeing posts like this. I test drove a new MT Sport and it howled on the road. Sales guy tried to pretend he didn't hear anything.

Based on the 13k so far... it rides nice. Looks nice. Pulls my boat nice. Hauls my firewood nice. Goes camping nice. Goes mountain biking nice. Hauls two beastly dirt bikes nice. Commutes nice.

    It's nice.

Okay, since you're feeding the devil on my shoulder that wants a 3rd gen. Would you buy a used one? Or a warranty less one.

At the end of the day that is your call. The 2nd gens are more proven platform, you can still see many driving around on the road. The 3rd gens are a unproven platform and from its start has been plauged by many quality control issues. Howling diff, leaking, failing CPS sensors etc. Low fluid from the factory. If I were do it again, still had my 5,500.00 down payment had to decide between a late 2nd gen or 3rd gen. I'd choose a 2nd gen or F150. Interior means nothing if the peformance isn't there. Its like a hot blonde who cant fuck in bed...

I know I get a ton of flak here. " why don't you just sell the damn thing" the truth of the matter is I CANT. I was also wrongly sent to collections on my first 17 Tacoma with a faluty diff. I traded that one back into the dealership who said they'll swap it out for a new one which they did. However, they never sent the check to Toyota Financial Services. So on paper I own TWO 17 Tacomas. My credit has taken a nose dive 50+ points.I'm out of down payment and stuck with another truck with a faulty differential.

Toyota executive and credit, dealerships feel like they don't have to answer to anybody. They're a serious shit show. Even makes lawyers heads hurt.

Used? Absolutely - except that the price of used ones makes buying new a no-brainer. When I bought my '17 last October they had a '15 with roughly the same kit and 58k miles for $29995. My '17 was $34k with 2 miles on it and 0.9% financing. Used just does not compute at that small difference in cost.

If you are finding a 3rd gen for sale as-is, today - it's been in a flood, a fire or pieced back together from scraps of two trucks. It's a three year warranty and they came out in '16. I mean, I guess it could just have a f**k ton of miles on it ... No. I wouldn't.

    Not true at all.

I would counter argue that it's a brand new truck and let the warranty fix the issues.

You and I both know that the diff issue encompassed the whole run of the second gen....

As for the Ford F150 - well, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence....until you jump that fence.

If you're making the move to a half ton, I had a Silverado (2006 CC Diesel with the bad-ass LBZ) and we still have 2008 work truck with the less bad-ass LML. I put 285K miles on the 2006 and the LML is still in our fleet - approaching 250K miles. No issues except sensors and small things here and there.

While those admittedly were not 1/2 tons, they were comfortable, reliable trucks. The 5.3L V-8 in the GM products is (with the exception of the cylinder deactivation system) a solid engine. We've racked a lot of miles in those without any issues.

My Dad's got a hard 200k on his LBZ...almost entirely hooked to an enclosed trailer or pushing snow. The powertrain on that truck is out of this world, just new glow plugs because some LBZ's shipped with crap ones. The rest of the truck isn't as solid. Brake lines, fuel lines, entire front end rebuild, brake calipers sticking, and the rockers are toast. If GM could build a truck body as well as they do a drivetrain, they would be untouchable.

My work uses F150's exclusively for work trucks. Super fun to drive but just about all of them have been back to the dealer for something. Lots of 2.7's have leaking oil pans from the factory is the most common

The 2006-early 2007 LBZ/Allison combo was the goddamn unicorn powertrain. I still cruise Craigslist looking for a relatively low mile one to buy. I'd fly halfway across the country to pick up the right one.

Prices on them are insane. Last year I found a 2006 CCSB loaded with only 37K miles. It sold within 2 days for - get this - $35K. Unbelievable.

The prices are absolutely insane on them, worse than second gen Tacoma’s. My Dad got his CCSB with 70k miles for $27k in 2009. Went shopping for one when I needed a tow rig a couple years ago thinking I could score a 100k mile one for sub $20k....boy was I wrong....And now I own a 7.3
