In Timmy the Toolman's front shock replacement video he uses two rubber cushions at the top shock mount. As he is describing their installation, the image in his manual (at about 8:16 on my video) shows only one cushion and that one is above the suspension mount plate. That's how I remember my 1998 Tacoma was set up when I last replaced the shocks 7 years ago - one cushion, a retainer, and then the nut.

In my 2000 Tacoma Repair Manual, two cushions are shown for each shock. The shocks I received from Bilstein came with zero cushions. Does anybody know why 1998 trucks have only one cushion while 2000 > have two?

A shock cushion is what Toyota has chosen to name a shock mounting bushing (don't ask me why...)

You have to reuse them from the old shock.

I do believe you can buy replacement hardware kits though if you want/need.

Toyota Dealer Prices (if anybody is interested) for shock cushions on a 1998 TRD:

Upper shock cushion $8.98 each
Lower shock cushion $6.98 each

That's $32 for four little molded pieces of hard rubber. Same thing at Napa's was $2 each = $8.

Update: The stuff from Napa's didn't work. Too small, so I ordered the cushions from a dealer. The part numbers are:

Upper (the larger, flat one): 90948-01057
Lower (the one with the little lip around the hole): 90948-01057

Defrost mirrors, compass/temp display rear view mirror, rear wiper on camper shell, trans.cooler.
I've only seen the kind pictured. A washer first, then a rubber bushing, The car body, a rubber bushing then a washer, then a nut.

    Dimensions taken off new cushions:

I'm replacing them because I noticed that the upper one was cracked all the way around its circumference before I began the project, and both were squished. New ones will last another 20 years (long after I've kicked the bucket).
