What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Only if you are a 98-00 then you'll have to swap to the smaller one

 

Watching to see how this works out. I'm tempted to upgrade myself.

 

You should be fine with your '04 as it already has the smaller MC.

Not having done it yet I am only repeating things I've read but Monte tells me I will not have the mushy brakes issue that some have experienced

@turbodb just did it on his '00. He has indicated he's not sure what all the hullabaloo is about, he's happy with the way his MC/booster combo is working.

Didn't I see someone post a picture of their tie down system? They had some steel running from each corner and used the factory tie down screws to mount the tie down rack.

Was that in this thread? I wanna get something like that going for my truck

Oh I’m fine with mine too, it was just a little “squishy” at first once I first applied the brake. As I pressed harder it was fine. Now I’m used to it so it’s nbd. But once it’s been DD retired it’ll get the smaller booster

No I was talking about their regular vertical uniball spindle - Paul said it would work with TC and Camburg (Camburg with slight modification of the uniball hardware to 5/8" bolts and misalignments and some filing on the lower) - not sure about MCM, but I don't see why not unless they do something really different.

 

Removing them is a bitch, but what I do is take a 3 arm universal puller, and get it all set up on the BJ/spindle, then take some bailing wire and wrap it around the arms close to the BJ. It really helps keep the arms from popping off. Make it go relatively smoothly.

Installing them, on the other hand, was an absolute bitch. The first time I did it, I used the installation method from bajataco, using a modified pitman arm puller, and it flat out sucked. Finally went in straight after many hours of swearing.

A month or so ago I did it a bit differently, but I also cheated with total chaos UCAs. Tossed the slug adapters in the freezer for a few hours, and then I used the proper BJ press I rented from the parts store. Went in like butter.

The new brakes are great - I can definitely feel the increased stopping power over stock. And yeah, I have no problem with my stock MC - pedal seems just as responsive as it ever was - arguably moreso, since the brakes are better (they actually "feel more right" for the amount of weight I'm driving around). I definitely recommend not automatically changing it - give whatever you have a try, and then only change the MC if you need to.
