What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Wait what? I'm doing the 13WL brake upgrade on my '98 pretty soon. This is the first I'm hearing of changing the brake booster.

 

You don't have too.

But if you do some research you'll find grumblings from people that say their pedal gets soft after swapping them. I swapped boosters in my install and hated it and went back to stock and came up with this theory.

95-00 tacomas have a 1" MC and dual diaphragm booster

01-04 have a 13/16" MC and single diaphragm booster

The earlier models push more volume but less pressure and the dual diaphragm booster makes for a soft pedal feel. Vs the smaller Mc which is higher pressure but less volume and single diaphragm booster which means a firmer more car like feel.

This is just my theory as it seems those that complain about a soft feel are all 95-00. Where as everyone that has 01-04 loves it.

I went into this very extensively in Igor's build thread.

That said. Both work fine. You just have to adjust. From my experience the smaller Mc and single booster perform way better and I like it much better.

Yeah pretty much.

My next experiment will be the smaller booster and Mc on normal brakes in frankenstein to see if it improves stopping at all as I run 15" wheels. Granted just new rotors for me will be a huge improvement.

What grade of bolt is it and i can tell you stretch lbs and shear strenght asap. I put those bolts along with driveline bolts. The more times its used, the more it stretches. Thus leading to it snaping or shearing.

 

Just added the bed liner.

No Tacomas came from Toyota with those. May be a dealer add on tho.

That’s aftermarket but screw it, buck the trend and be the guy that embraces chrome. I say add more.

Rocker panels/kicker pannels. Popular in the 90's. Lots fords had them mostly from summit. They were stuck with thin double sided tape for the most part.

 

Upgraded the ballasts in my hella hids from 35w to 70w. Much better!! Now just to replace the three center euro beams with pencil beams.

Question: is there a way to know what Rims size came with the truck? 15” or 16”? The inside of the door maybe? I am not sure what it originally was calibrated for? 16” or 15”. I want to just make it how it should be for now. Thanks
