    hey taco lovers.

I bought a full size spare to match my 285 70 r 17s. Put it under the truck. It’s barely touching the heat shield shrouding the exhaust. See photos. I plan on getting a rear high clearance bumper with tire gate later but for now worried I might melt the spare. Any thoughts. I might start the car and measure the temp of that heat shield with my infrared thermometer after a while. 43D26325-B075-4D10-9C47-A8932510EA77.jpg

Since you’re going hc bumper eventually anyway cut the exhaust over the axle and lose that whole piece. Problem solved.

I think that would direct more hot gasses against the tire possibly melting the tire and any other rubber and electrical components down there. Isn’t the point of the exhaust is to get it out from under the truck?

No. I know many people with cut exhaust and spare under with no issues, including myself for a while. It’s not that hot. Do you burn pedestrians legs next to your idling truck on the curb when parallel parked? I’d hope not

If it’s not that hot then why do I even need to cut it?

He's talking about the exhaust gas not being that hot verse the pipe itself.

Plenty of people do exactly what he's talking about, especially if you're gonna be wheeling your truck. One reason people do it, is to prevent it from getting drug onto the ground.

Just remember as the temperature increases so does the pressure in the tire

As these are low pressure it should be fine but better safe then sorry

Any way to move the exhaust over by bending some mounts? Trying to fit a 33 but worried about the heat shield touching. I would chop but I read the exhaust gases going directly on the tire is just as bad

There is some room on the crossmember to relocate the hoist an inch or so, another option to consider.

Mounting to the bed rail can damage (crack) the weak bed wall sheetmetal.

    Holy thread revival.

Mine never did. I ran it there for a couple years. What sheet metal you taking about? The back corner pillers? Because the rest is composite

I have 255/85/16s with that size in the spare location. There are two prongs / keeper / guide things as part of the spare mount system at about 10 and 2 o’clock when looking toward the front of the truck. Mine fits fine but I have to guide the tire rearward a bit to keep the tire’s radius slightly off center from the hoist, again, toward the rear. This keeps the tire both off the exhaust and off the diff when flexing.

As suggested, I amputated my exhaust anyway.
