Did you just match the thread pattern with a tap or use a heli-coil?

I found a really old 13 pool ball and I've been thinking about doing the same thing with it.

How did I match the thread pattern? Well, first I removed the old gear shift knob and I used it to find the proper sized drill and tap needed. If the tap would screw down into the old knob then I knew I had the proper size. Then I wrapped the 8 ball with a rag to prevent damage, put it in a vice, drilled it and tapped it. The material that the 8 ball is made of seems to be plenty dense enough to screw down onto the shifter arm nice and tight so you really dont need a heli-coil. As I transferred the 8 ball from truck to truck the shifter were a different size and usually they got larger each time which worked out pretty well, so I would have to drill and tap it again to a larger size, however a couple times the shifter arms were smaller so I filled the hole with fiberglass resin and redrilled and retapped it to the proper size and I was still in business. One way or another I have always gotten it to work. Then As the years went by I got more and more attached to it.
