Where they lived back then there was probably 3 potential suspects and everyone knew he had recently bought new shoes and had a bone to pick. I would love to know what that bone was! I just have an old newspaper clipping, and my mom confirming that her grandpa was a bit ornery.

This shouldn't be viewed as a plug for a dealership or a knock on another - it's simply for educational and financial purposes. I contacted Landers about pricing me an extended warranty. After getting some pricing, I contacted Midwest Toyota (Kansas) about its pricing. Just to give you an example, the price difference on a 5 year 80,000 extended warranty was $1,030 dollars ($1,000 vs. $2,030). According to Landers, this was "our best price." This example above is an apples to apples comparison - Toyota Platinum with $0 deductible (honored by all Toyota Dealer service centers). If purchased in Kansas, you would also save upwards of $200 from sales tax.

I just bought a 4Runner from Landers for my wife, and the guy selling the warranties was a cool dude but yeah, it was way more than I was willing to pay. He didn't pressure me. That vehicle will hit the time limit long before it hits the miles, so just not worth it. I rarely buy warranties anymore, either never use them or get pissed off when I try to and find out they only cover part of what needs to be done. I did buy one on the last printer I bought, those things are pure junk these days. They will probably add a disposal fee like on tires soon.

I have not had good experience with Landers. Their salesperson was somewhat condescending to my wife and me, I believe based on age. We were there to look at 4Runners and he kept trying to take us to the RAV4s and Corollas.

I was concerned when North Point was sold to McLarty. We'll see if the service stays the same.

Well, I'm going to chime in on my experience with both. I purchased my truck from North Point Toyota in North Little Rock. I gave Landers Toyota an opportunity to gain my business. I told the salesperson exactly what I would pay for the truck, what North Point offered for my trade and told him exactly where he needed to be to beat the deal. On the day the Broadway Bridge was torn down, I drove to Landers Toyota to buy a truck. They came back with me and they were $3,500 away from the original deal that North Point Toyota offered me. I was immediately pissed at that offer and had to demand my keys back three times before I received my keys back to my vehicle. I drove to North Point Toyota and purchased a different truck that was $900 more. The truck that I received a quote on sold like 15 minutes before I got there. I was extremely happy with the deal! Now that I've had the truck and had a couple of things go wrong with it , McLarty Toyota service department was awful to deal with and I had to go to Caldwell Toyota in Conway to get service completed. Doc, you touched a nerve....lol.

I bought an AREcamper shell for my truck. I saved $850 buying it in Memphis. Goss Camper sales was the highest bid by far. I called 5 dealers. It pays to shop.

Yeah, new to the area and have no experience with any dealership here, but I have low expectations of any of their sales departments. I would have shopped around, but buying the 4Runner was a scheme I was running on the wife and daughter and was not a planned event. Longer story there, will share it over a beer sometime if anyone cares. But I did get a chance to educate the sales guy on the differences between the various models, and got out with a deal I could live with.

Let's just agree that buying new vehicles sucks for the most part. When I lived in Austin, I tried to buy local but all 3 dealers hired only asshats. I did get my 04 locally, but that was a one time screaming deal 2k below invoice which is unheard of on a Tacoma. I signed as fast as I could. I found a guy in Waco and had a standing deal, 500 over invoice, what I asked on trade in (which was always fair to both of us but not as low as they always offer), in and out in 30 minutes. Even referred a coworker and got a surprise check for 100 bucks. It was a 100 mile drive, but better than dealing with asshats.

Bottom line is that it's not always the dealership, building a relationship with a salesperson that is mutually beneficial can go a long way.

But this started with the warranty discussion. If they are trying to sell it, you probably don't need it. Most things that will go wrong happen within the standard warranty period. Odds are in favor of the house. But shop around.
