I posted this under another topic, but wanted more views in an attempt to get more input. I'm trying to determine if there are there the same transmission issues with the 2017 four cylinder automatics? The posts for the issues and aftermarket fixes seem to focus on six cylinder models.

My four cylinder SR has a 10/17 build date, shifts fine from p to d, d to r. It does like to go into 4th gear on the highway, where I usually like to travel at 80 mph. I'm just wondering if that is normal due to the smaller motor. This happens on highway inclines, and merging on to the highway. It will settle back to fifth or sixth when things level out. My first thought is that it's a small motor doing what it can to get rolling at higher speeds.

Also, any thoughts on driving the truck with the manual automatic mode all the time? It's kind of like having a mt sans the left foot. Did not know if this would hurt the transmission over time.

Sorry to bring up transmissions again. This should be a short one though, being that it's for four cylinders.

    Thanks for any input.

I ALWAYS drive my Tacos in "Manual Automatic" (Sport) mode. When I head down my steep drive it's in 1st just as if I were driving a MT. When I come to a stop I shift to use engine braking then back to "D". ETC always on unless I'm on the open highway and above 60MPH. Been doing this for more than 20 years with no issues. If you learn to drive these Tacomas, they do just fine. I you are a "put it in "D" and leave it" driver, you might be dissapointed. Ultimately, it comes down to pushing the little pedal on the right. My 3rd gen gets 19-20+ mpg the way I drive it.

Mine downshifts on inclines when using cruise control, and will actually downshift on occasion when encountering high headwinds, also while using cruise control. I don't notice much downshifting when not using cruise control, but she'll slow down a bit on inclines. I've yet to use the manual automatic mode, but will give it a shot the next time I drive it.
