Warming up your 3rd gen for winter driving

Anyone else notice the 3.5L takes forever to warm up? Starting to notice it on some cool evenings even if I remote start it could be 10 minutes into my drive before it's blowing warm air.

 

Turn the seat heaters on high each time before you park for the night.

 

Yes, I’ve noticed this as well.

 

I don’t know, mine seems to warm up pretty quickly. We haven’t had ten degree weather or anything yet, but a couple mornings in the low twenties. I don’t recall it taking forever to get warm, definitely not ten minutes.

 

It warms up quite quickly while driving. I just crank the taint heaters!

 

My truck seems to get heat pretty quickly as well, in the few 20 degree days we have had here.

 

Yes, and the good mpg's I was getting in the summer are gone. Gas price's are up 50 cents and I have to choose between defrosting the windscreen or getting heat. just saying

 

Mine heats up nice and quick.

 

I haven't noticed any long delay, but we use what my wife calls "seat meat heaters" also.

 

Fire it up and after about a minute take off - it will heat up faster.

 

I thought the new Tacoma's have an electric heating element in the heater core for faster warm ups. I have the manual climate controls and turn the temperature dial all the way up. Maybe there's a particular setting of the auto climate that makes the electric kick in.

 

I am understand with the new fuel injected vehicles, you do not need to let them warm-up like the older carbureted vehicles. On the cold days, maybe let it run for a 1 or 2 minutes or so, then go?

 

Mine warms up quickly. I feel bad for it on cold nights though...I get fire calls late at night and I dont give it any time to "wake up" before I take off wide open. Not the best for it but....

 

I agree with you regarding fuel injected vs carbureted engines, but the original post was in reference to allowing the vehicle to warm to generate heat in the interior.

I've always been told you're not supposed to let your car warm up while parked, it sends enriched gas to the engine trying to compensate for the cold and could put unnecessary wear on your engine. and you should always keep it under 2-25 rpm while its warming up

 

Need to let it warm up a little bit to get the oil pumped up to the top of the engine lubing everything up. I know the way I start up and take off on those late night fire calls, i'm probably doing damage. But the

0W20 oil thats in my truck is about the consistency of water even when it's cold so im crossing my fingers hoping it's not doing too much.

 

lol that is funny 2-25 rpm, yes I know its a fat finger since the std idle speed id 600-1200 rpm depending on temp. close to 2k when its like -20F

and it warms up just fine in about 15mins when its -20F

edit : and I take it you have never tried to put a transmission in gear when its -30F or colder and you don't let it warm up.

 

Any decent seat heaters out there?

I didn't get a limited so no heated seats

 

Wasting gas for nothing by warming it up for 10 minutes. (unless it's like -20). Sooner you drive it, the sooner it warms up.
