I just recently painted my 2003 toyota tacoma 4 door and it looks super clean. I changed all the chrome plates around the truck too as they were pealing and man the truck looks brand new. The only thing left I want to do now is change the exhaust tip because mine is very rusted. I know I can clean them but I want a chrome look. I don't know anything about exhausts as I have never boughten one but I do know that some are straight exhaust with no converter which then throws you a check engine light. I dont want to run into any lights or problems so I was thinking about just buying a tip. Is this possible? Would I run into any problems changing the tip? Any recommendations, don't want anything too loud.

Tip is an easy and inexpensive replacement.

I’d change the muffler only if you want noise, tip if you only want it to look better.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Get a stainless exhaust tip and you’ll be rolling like a G

Hit your local auto parts store. They’ll have probably a dozen to choose from.

Stick with something with 1/2” more diameter or less. It’ll attach with a set screw to the existing pipe. Or you can go to an exhaust shop and have them weld one on. They probably have 20-30 different choices (mostly diameter though).

1/2" sounds kind of small though or am I wrong? The original one is at least 2"

Mainly chrome look. I know they have them exhaust that are real loud and I don't my truck to be loud. Sporty sound is nice but nothing overly loud.

1/2” of your current exhaust size.

You don’t want a 2” exhaust pipe with a 4” tip. It looks terrible. Keep it OEM looking, so watch the diameter of the new tip. I’d keep it within half an inch (larger).

Money isnt an issue. I was thinking of getting a used TRD muffler. When I check on ebay, theyre from the newer 2017 tacomas. Does anyone know if that would fit my tacoma?
