Hey folks, just picked up a new 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport a couple weeks ago and have a few "newbie" technology questions.

First, is there way I can change the settings on my navigation system so that it doesn't automatically switch to a dim (black) map between dusk and dawn?

Second, when I have the navigation system on, actively helping me reach a destination that I've programmed into it, is there a way I can set it up so that when the lady's voice comes on to tell me which way to turn, it will automatically, temporarily cancel/mute the radio until she's done speaking? It's very annoying and confusing to hear her talking while the radio is on.

Third, is there trick for turning on the back-up camera while driving forward? For instance, simultaneously hold down the radio station seek button and volume button? It would be very helpful to be able to switch it on while driving forward to periodically check on the load you may be towing (is the boat still strapped down?), to see the license plates of the bozos following too close behind, and to make sure you've pulled far enough ahead when driving forward into a a parking space. I read somewhere that you can slam the gear shift into reverse while driving forward, but I am wondering if there is another less terrifying way of activating the camera?

    Thanks!

    1) I don't think so. I would make mine stay dark if I could.
    2) Maybe. I think you can adjust the mix of nav volume to radio volume but I'm not sure if you can completely mute the radio volume during it. Either way they'll be in the settings on the headunit.
    3) No. You can however buy aftermarket stuff that will allow you to active the rear camera at anytime.

Regarding the map, I can't imagine why you'd want yours to stay dark. I would prefer mine to stay bright, with the option of manually dimming it to a desired level. On the dark mode I can barely see it. I almost need a flashlight to see it.

    None as of yet
the second has to be a setting because my unit mutes momentarily when it speaks. Which drives me crazy when driving in traffic because about every 3 minutes it pauses the song and alerts me that there is traffic which I am sitting in.

Yes on the map being bright, but you have to have the truck running to see the option in the settings. You can change it to Daylight- always on.

    No on the voice.

Yes on the camera. Put it in reverse over 40mph, but I wouldn't do it. The tranny won't go into reverse, built in failsafe, but I still wouldn't do it.

EDIT: and the headlights need be on for daylight mode option.

Extremely disappointed my odd 80s music expertise was not of use here, as the thread title led me to believe it would be.

Mine switches the map to night mode when I have the headlights on. I've always appreciated this and never found it to be an issue.

LOVE the look of the 3rd gen interior at night with the blue lights and dimmed map. One of the best things about the redesign IMO.

Readability doesn't reduce for me. It's just inverted. I wish more things were like this. Backgrounds should be dark and pertinent information should be bright. It reduces strain on the eyes. No reason to have all that light emitting for useless background information. One of my biggest gripes about iOS.
