Finally get to contribute to the thread :) I've been into tying flies a lot and finally caught some fishies with it! A month ago I went to the Upper Owens and got skunked. Saw the fish rising but couldn't get them to bite. Maybe too much fishing pressure? IDK.
So this last time when I pulled up and saw a grip of fisherman I turned around kept driving. Ended up on deadman creek where it flows into the upper Owens and caught my very first fish on a hand tied fly! And my first fish on the new setup- moonshine rods epiphany and sage 2230. Caught it on a rainbow warrior on the first cast! I was whooping and hollering since no one was around. What an exciting feeling!!that part of the Owens is beautiful with lots of trees and it is secluded Bc it's not near the hot spots.

The next day after camping, I hit up Hot Creek. They had just restocked it the week before and boy was the bite on! I caught a total of 3 in 4 hours, seemed to spend a lot of time untangling my two nymph setup. But I Caught them on hand tied a Rainbow Warrior, a red Copper John and a hares ear nymph. What a satisfying and humbling feeling to know that I caught them on my own flies!

Agreed. Few things are more gratifying than catching a fish on a fly you've tied.

I remember watching a 3M video back in the 80s when I was learning to tie and the dude was sitting streamside with a little net pulling out some aquatic insects from the water, tying a match right there, and then proceeding to catch fish with it.

As a kid I was blown away by it. As a grown up kid I still think it's super badass!

If you still have that fly and that's the fish you caught with it... get a printed picture of the fish you caught with it, glue the fly to the picture and put in a frame.

I'd love to have my first tied fly and picture of the fish. It was an ausable wulff on a brown trout on the St. Regis River in nothern NY. Still can see the fly drifting and the run I caught it in.

I have a black sinking line, and I think a black section of a shooting head system, but never have seen a black floating line.

This is something I really want to start doing. Catfishing is only so fun. Lots of mountain lakes around northern az so this would be worth the day trip.
