Hey everyone. I was wondering if there are any paintable grill options for our trucks? Not a fan of the chrome being that it throws off the "sport" theme of the truck. Kinda going for this look...

If you have that grilll pictured, I’m pretty sure they just sanded the chrome and painted over it. Didn’t think about that , it actually looks pretty good

Maybe not the best picture, but I sanded mine down and painted it.

I rattle canned mine. It's refreshing to be forced to take your time and do things right. It's not hard, just teaches you patience.

Rustoleum. did it about late september or early october last year? there is one spot on the grill, about 2 mm by 2 mm that chipped off but otherwise no issue with the paint. I washed it with dawn then rubbing alcohol to make sure there was no wax on it. I didn't sand off the chrome from the plastic.

My only gripe is that I used a high gloss on the bezel and the toyota symbol, flat black on the rest. It looked really good with the contrast (I thought) But by early spring, the gloss became pretty flat. I'll probably redo it in the spring and put a clear coat on it this time around.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Nice treatment for your black truck -- I am not a big fan of black, but they look great for the 10 minutes (if you are lucky) after you wash your vehicle.
Your grille treatment looks great -- the red sets it off nicely!

Thanks! Black and red are my favorite colors so the whole truck will be black w red accents all over (the tailgate letters are red as well). Still, black wasn't my first choice, but after beating the dealer up as much as I could, they offered me black at the price I wanted. Black actually doesn't look too bad even a week or more after a wash. It's untill you get right up on it you notice all the dust and imperfections.

What process did you do with this paint? Any prep or clear coat? Came out great and want to do the same. Thanks in advance for any advise you have.

OP - do a search on - BBP color keyed Grille mod on 3rd gen forum
also check these links - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/bbp-color-keyed-grille-mod.398636/

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/bbp-color-keyed-grille-mod.398636/page-10

there are step by step procedures on this forum and which kind of adhesion promoter, paint, sand paper listed in the directions. see first link - I did my grill in the color keyed option and it came out GREAT. Just follow the directions exactly and don't substitute materials. buy the ones listed. Also - TAKE YOUR TIME sanding and get all the chrome off between the nooks and crannies on the grill. Its time consuming but the finished result is great

All I did was scotch-brite the chrome to rough it up, then just used rustoleum bed liner spray. Used Rustoleum Satin Paprika on the emblem to color match it to the Inferno.

I sanded the chrome a little bit to promote adhesion them I used self etching primer before applying the top coat. No clear coat. I did this back in March and so far it looks good as new.

Would have been nice if you put in a little more effort/attention to detail and didnt leave pits in the filler like that.. shoddy workmanship

I dipped the grille black and used gold wheel paint on the emblem. There are various ways to do it. Seen lots of people paint match their emblems. Do what you like. IMG_1506.jpg

I am waiting for my $140 faux Pro Chinese grille to arrive. Probably going to use it while I prep and paint my Sport grille. Leaning towards the post #3 look. Now I am going to pick up some blaze blue plasti dip. There are so many people buying the cheap Pro grilles I am thinking of dipping mine similar to new 4runner type grilles. Just looking to be different and dip is only $8 a can. If it looks too bad I will just peel it off, run it black and focus on my Sport grille paint scheme.
