Never spent time on a destroyer, but 8 1/2 months on a carrier and seeing how many people were on a topside watch leads me to think that it cant just be the officers faults. Plenty of enlisted on watch at any time. None the less, sucks to see this happening again with more injured and missing sailors.

Yeah, people dicking off on watch. Ultimate responsibility falls on the captain, but at 5am...it was most likely some E1 steering, a 19-20 year-old just-qualified JO OOD, probably another someone on the bridge left the watch for a coffee run, the sailor in combat that was watching the sweep was doing touch-and-goes being up since 0200. Unless inclement weather was a contributing factor, I just don't understand how you hit large vessels at sea. You're supposed to have multiple people on watch on the bridge and in CIC. Shit happens though, mistakes are made all the time--it's just the severity that separates them. The problem is that not everyone takes the shit as seriously as they should.

It's sickening to lose brothers and sisters to these kind of mishaps that should not happen. Especially at the ludicrous frequency at which they have been occurring.

They're finding remains inside again :(

Also investigating if there was any hacking involved.

    Some really cool shit
This occurred in one of the busiest shipping areas of the planet. Everyone on watch should have been extremely vigilant. Short of foul play, there is no reason on earth this should have happened to such a sophisticated piece of machinery, in the finest Navy that ever existed.

This sort of accident shouldn't ever happen outside of a one-off equipment failure. Certainly not in the frequency at which they've happened recently. I'd be hard pressed to believe that our warships were hacked...with that being said, if that was the case and it could be confirmed with a smoking gun (which would be nearly impossible), that's an act of war.

What years? I was on the USS Hopper from 2001-2007. We were deployed to areas with the Cole during a couple of my tours. Also an FC

Tired watchmen, counting down the minutes to turnover, loosing situational awareness. Had to imagine those in the pilot house AND CIC not aware of vessels closing proximity. Sleeping sailers trust their shipmates to keep vigilent watch. Too sad.

We were probably in the water at the same time then...I was on the Cole from around 05-08. We did a deployment in '06 to chase pirates off Somalia.

You were on the Stennis when those JBDs fell on those two ABEs in port? North Island. We were on deck watching that whole scenario go down from the Connie!
