Thanks for posting this. I have only had the truck a few days, but would never have thought of tailgate theft. I had a clamp already on the shelf that worked.

I might also add the washers to the cable ends.

    Have a good one.

Just tried this on my '17 and yeah it didn't work because the connection slants. I tightened it down really tight and was able to knock it loose. Is there a way around this that I'm not seeing?

So here is the alternative to the hose clamp to ensure your tailgate will not get stolen on you new 3rd Generation Tacoma.

I noticed that the fitting wasn't straight, but didn't have any problem. My clamp hasn't moved, but I haven't tried to see if I could remove the tailgate if it came loose. Does yours come free?

I haven't tried to take it off with the clamp loose.

Yes there is a slight update to add clearance to an area where there was interference. Anything shipped out will have the update and we will have that update applied tomorrow morning and verified on a 2016.

The ones that were shipped will be replaced with the updated part. Those folks were notified of the interference as soon as we were.

If you place an order you will get the updated part with the additional clearance.

I just ran a 6' bicycle security cable from my tailgate to the truck. I come out the same tailgate hole as the camera cable, and enter the truck body at hole about 10" away from the camera cable hole. If you remove the plastic covers from the tailgate, you will find no end of various places to wrap/bolt/lock the cable to inside the tailgate, and of course the frame abounds with places to wrap a cable around. It works great, is completely invisible, and will slow down the tweakers a little more.

The whole thing is bathed in CorrosionX, and the locks are wrapped in enough tape to prevent rattles and any sort of water intrusion.

I suppose one of those bike racks that lock into the hitch receiver can prevent the tailgate from opening at all. I'll probably do that as well to make it obvious that it is a hard target.

The cable was really easy to pull, too. I'm not the kind of guy to take on anything very tricky, and I had no trouble with it.

I do need to finish the job by replacing the snap-in grommet that protects the electrical cable as it passes through the square hole in the bottom of the tailgate. I'm spoiled for choice (https://www.cableorganizer.com/grommets/), so that won't be all that hard, either.

I"m new here and just got my truck 3 months ago. I may have missed the post but are you saying the tailgate can get stolen even if it is locked?

Has anyone heard of someone stealing a 1st Gen tailgate, and if so how can I prevent it?

Did washer mod today - to reiterate what a poster said above on post 1034, page 52: skateboard speed washers are the correct diameter and are perfect for this application. I used 3 of these little guys, plus the bigger one on the end.

Thanks chris4x4! Their are 3 tacomas including mine that are regularly parked in the lot where I work. Recently 2 of the 3 tacoma tailgates were stolen within 20 mins of each other. Mine was not! When the Police arrived to fill out a report, I was showing them what I had done years ago, thanks to your advice. When I opened my tailgate, we noticed that my cables where unhooked. The thieves opened my tailgate, removed the cables but noticed my hose clamps and closed the tailgate and moved on. Thank you so much for the advice!!!! You saved me a lot of $$$$!!!!!

I am happy that they closed it rather than just letting it drop on to the bumper.
