Anybody have any experience with octane boosters that you can buy at wal mart or auto parts store? I run 91 or 93 whatever it is here in N.C. I can't think of it off the top of my head, but does anyone use octane booster or found one that benefits mpg any? I found about a 2mpg increase going from 87 octane to 93/91 octane. Just wondering if that stuff actually helps anything or if its just snake oil

Our engines are best off with 87 honestly, I have never put any of that additive stuff in.

Increased octane does not increase fuel economy.

The typical boosters you buy at Walmart doesn't actually boost octane enough to matter. If it says boosts octane 10 points.. that doesn't mean 87-97. that means 87-88. there are some concentrated kind that you can get, that is basically concentrated race fuel. But the price vs result is too high for a motor designed to run on 87

Guess it was worth a try lol my truck likes the 91 octane the best, I get 2 mpg over 87 octane guess I'll keep throwing 91 in the tank then

Do the math. Betting the cost delta isn't worth the mpg gain.

Regardless, never seen a well cared for regular fuel motor benefit from higher octane. You may have a unicorn.

trust me i looked everywhere for a magic liquid that will boost mpg but unfortunately, there is none. the only thing that will actually help you get the best mpg is a clean air filter, clean throttle body, good clean spark plugs, correct tire pressure (make sure to check it monthly), and try to keep it under 2k rpm when driving

    Did the math,
    I'm paying about 13 cents a mile for premium at ~3$/gal [3$/gal 20 gallons 22mpg 440mi/tank]
    Paying 12 cents a mile for regular at 2.43/gal [2.43/gal 20 gallons 19mpg 380mi/tank]

I always assumed since I got better mpg I was getting a better deal with using premium

We run into problems in the winter with people running premium in there Toyota's.

I would stick with 87 no ethanol if it's an option in your area.

There's no logical reason why your truck would get better mileage with higher octane unless the 87 has ethanol in it.

As for additives to obtain higher octane good performance engines they are out there and a few work as advertised

Higher octane does not increase mpg. It’s a proven fact. If your vehicle is getting better mpg there there is an outside reason effecting your tests, it is not the octane content of the fuel causing it. This is literally the same as saying a red car is faster.

The only way these benefit your mpg is by lightening up your wallet so your truck has less weight to carry

I'm guessing the difference is ethanol v non ethanol. I don't think anyone around here sells 87 without ethanol. Pretty much all of the premium gas here is non ethanol. I just run the ethanol 87.

This argument always reminds me of reports of CAI and K&N style filters boosting HP and mileage. :annoyed: It's all BS

I’ve seen that if you use trash in you gas tank, you can fly and go back in time.

Ask Doc Brown and Marty McFly.

Probably more realistic than using an octane booster

If your engine isn't knocking and pinging when using 87 octane, then you're good. However, I have noticed a difference in fuel mileage with different BRANDS of gas. Maybe 10 to 20 miles per tank difference. I usually got more mileage when filling my Ford Exploder with Chevron or Unocal 76. I'm filling the Taco with Chevron and have seen the advertised 17city 21hwy mileage.
