1st gen 3.4 oil catch can install

I decided to install an Oil Catch Can. Some people are for them, some don't see a need, but when I was doing my research there was a lot of second gen mod information and "how to".
It even took me a little to find the right information on where the PCV ( positive crankcase valve) was on the 3.4.
So here's just a simple tutorial of what I did

The tube that comes from the block and goes into the intake plenum is the one you want to remove. (purple plug is the positive crankcase valve)

I got another PCV and rubber bushing from Toyota for about $20. the old grommet was dry and cracked so be careful when removing.

next was simple, insert the new rubber grommet and PCV.

Fine a place to mount the catch can, and route the lines. A tube should come from the PCV from the motor, to the inlet of the Catch Can, then the outlet from the can should go to the air intake port where the old tube was removed.



I got the reinforced fuel line from autozone to prevent it from collapsing from vacuum during operation.
Hope this helps some, cause I had to look around a bit for more info myself to clear things up before I did this mod.

I thought about the Add-W1. But I spent $35 on Amazon one. Same design, everything seemed well machined.

Thought the 3.4L was a port injection system for the motor so the fuel cleans the valves in turn resulting in the valves being clean and not getting oil gunk on them so the catch can is useless?

Have you ran it yet? I'm curious how much a NA engine will need it.

I see about 1/3 quart every 10k miles being supercharged.

 

hmm... I never came across that in my searches. Could be true, but isn't there still an oil and air mix coming out of the PCV and going back to the intake?

 

I just got it on today. I will have to see after driving for a month or two what the outcome is.

 

There would still be oil gunk crap from the point it's routed into the intake until the valves, I think.

 

Both correct I still believe there would be in the intake but wouldn’t really effect the performance. But still probably best to run the catch can since so simple

What's the point of the oil catch can? Are you afraid of the oil buildup holding valves open or something? Just wondering what's wrong with burning a little oil....

 

First I've heard of an "oil catch can". I thought you were going to write up how to install a can that would catch the oil pouring out of the oil filter at filter change time...

 

They are great for boosted applications to keep residual oil out of the intake tract... Still trying to figure out why the brain washed put them on NA applications. /Flame suit on

I will take the bait. First, post up your observations on a NA 3.4 over say 2-3 years. Then I'll post mine.

 

I'm super charged. I'm going to see how much oil I catch with mine.

Basically feeding your motor its own shit, we bypass the emissions garbage on bikes also.. they are N/A.

Less carbon build up on the pistons. Valves cool down better with out a coat of oil between them and the seat also.
