What is the advantage of that J-arm type upper? Or is it just a packaging decision?

 

Only advantage you really gain is if you are having a hard time stuffing in parts. J-arm becomes mandatory on Center Mount suspension because the J arms would go in front of the motor. This design won't buy you anymore than the UCA wrapping around the shocks like the kit out for the 2nd gens. This design sure looks cool. You do need a strong engine cage to handle a J-arm. Puts a lot of force on the little toyota frame.

My J-arm actually reduces the anti-dive angle and allows for a little more wheel travel.

Also makes it way easier to fit a 3.0 bypass on a first gen tacoma.

The j-arm mounts with be stout!
