What is the level of difficulty on this job it seems to be pretty straight forward or is it worth the shop visit prices?

Depends how handy you are. Undo the brakes, remove the axle shafts replace the seals install the rest then do a brake bleed.

If gear oil is running out of the axle seals you're going to need more than axle seals. The sealed axle bearing is junk if oil runs though it. Also check your axle breather on top of the diff if it rusts shut and is not replaced you'll do this job again. The hot diff oil causes the air to expand in the axle housing until pop goes the seal

Is it possible that the wheel bearing is fine and the seal has just gone bad and what would you call the seal in reference to buy at an auto parts store

I had the same problem. As Itchyfeet said first check the differential breather on the top of the hub. Make sure it moves up and down when you push on it. If it doesn't, remove and clean or replace. Mine was frozen shut causing too much pressure which caused a leak. Once I cleaned it up the leak stopped.

You can go that route if your brake shoes are worn out. I just cleaned up my drums and shoes real good with brake cleaner and have not had any problems since.
