    Hey Gang, love the site!

I am going to buy a Tacoma. I love the Off Road package, but am curious what it takes to convert a Sport. Money is an option, but I don't want to be foolish. I am in Michigan and do a lot of fishing and hunting off the grid. I have driven a Ford F-250 Heavy Duty that can do anything, accept in the tight corners I keep getting in.

I read a lot about off road packages like Old Man Emu (one example). If I have to convert stuff, do I start with an Off Road or a Sport, and what does it take to get a Sport to be at least an Off Road. I hope that makes sense.

    Thanks

The sport will never have ATRAC (toyotas advanced traction system) but you can swap in a Eaton elocker or an ARB air locker in the rear. That will bring you up to where the off road is (some argue better than where the OR is) those two things are what seperate the sport from the OR. If you have ability to buy the OR or sport and enjoy offroading alot i would definately go with the OR to start with.

    Welcome to TW!!

Old man Emu isnt really an offroad package, its just one of the thousands of suspensions combos people on here use. The offroad edition really only differentiates from the sport in the fact that the OR package has a E-locker, BFG rugged fail tires, and the TRD bilstein suspension. And the sport has the limited slip diff. Thats really the only difference. Swapping in a locker, aggressive tires, some suspension travel and good driving will get you anywhere you need brotha.

The sport has bilstein suspension as well.

If you are just meaning suspension then you’re already there. The Off Road and sport model have almost identical suspension setups. The biggest difference in the Atrac which you can’t add to a sport in a cost effective way. The e locker can be added to a sport or an air locker like an ARB. You have be more clear on specifically what you want the sport to do?

Also to add to this, you could just save money by getting an SR5 and adding a locker and suspension.

If you like the hood scoop, buy a sport. If you don't like the scoop, buy an off road.

    Simple as that.

Correct, but the offroad edition gets the front offroad bilstein progrssive coilovers that the sport doesnt.

If you want the hood scoop and the off-road dodads buy a pro. Boom, problem solved.

It’s the coil springs that are progressive not the shocks, and they are not made by bilstein.

I didn’t say they were great skid plates. I just said the Sport doesn’t get them. And I do like the cleaner front end on the OR.

To be honest, I don’t understand what “sport” and “4x4” have in common.

Get an SR5 and put a locker in the rear with the money you save. Or just spend that money on tires and shit. I thought I'd have lockers by now, but this truck just keeps not getting stuck (mostly).

I agree. I think the SR5 is a damn good looking truck. I’d take one of those before a TRD Sport.

We’re talking 2nd gen here, I think you’re getting confused with the 3rd gens. The 2nd gens had less differences in the front end appearance, mostly just the surround of the grill and a hood scoop. Everything else was the same, actually from the front an SR5 and and off-road are identical in looks.
