Looking to replace the OEM headlights (regular not high beam) bulbs with a more powerful type but not LED kind. I don't want to add stuff to the electrical system, just to replace the bulb with a better one. What options are there?

I went the Phillips H11 X-tremevVision route. Seemed brighter and whiter than stock

Just add an HID kit from Xenon Depot. It is plug and play, amp draw is similar to regular halogen and the improvement was amazing. Any "brighter" halogen is going to have an increased wattage, more amp draw, and possibility of increased heat/damage.

I used some bulbs from Osram, the difference is not dramatic but it is improved.

If you are looking for conventional bulbs, these are some of the best performers available. You’ll need to check H11 availability:
If you want a really powerful conventional bulb, check this out:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-ultimate-foglight-upgrade-not-led-or-hid.435419/

Your low beam headlight projectors will maintain the cut offs and allow you to run HIDs which will outperform all conventional bulbs, just look for a quality kit in the low 4000k color temp range. Some lower quality kits have poor EMI shielding and will introduce static on your radio or CB when the headlights are on.

Too much friggin' work. I'm getting a feeling that buying a Tacoma means "fixer upper" at this point.

    NOTE TO TOYOTA:
Jeesh put in some better headlights! Especially at the pricepoints you demand for mini- trucks.

Seriously? you purchase the second lowest config truck and complain about the features. MANY cars have terrible headlights. The Tacoma headlights are far from terrible even in stock form. Should have bought the chevy.

There are times at night when you can't tell you have headlights on...even the wife points that out.

Also her base model Ford Escape has better lighting than the Taco. I really hope the higher Taco trim levels have better/more powerful lights.

The thing that bugs me is that quality headlights should be standard. Other than that I like my truck...

My main complaint about the low beams is the top cutoff. Too abrupt. Lots of hills around here and when heading downhill I can't see above the cutoff.

I've actually experience shit headlights in Kia and ford so its pretty common.

Does the 3rd gen really have that poor of a light output? My 2nd gen; never had an issue with lighting. Perfectly bright for what it is; but I recommend the Sylvania ZXE headlight bulbs. They are an improvement over stock but in terms of brightness I think having a yellower light seems to be better. The Sylvania's are a definitely whiter.
