In mid august I recieved a recall letter from toyota to replace a faulty CPS. After waiting at the dealership for several hours they finish. The next day while driving up to denver(moving for school) the vehicle began to shudder violently, surge and lose power. I was in a pickle because I had all of mine and my GF’s possesions on the ned and I had a deadline to meet. I kept driving, keep in my mind nor warnings showed up on my dash board. Finally I get around and schedule an appointment with stevenson toyota. After I drop off my truck the call me back and say I meed a new transmission because there was a dent in the oil pan, most likely from off roading. Keep in mind I never actually saw the dent. So I pay 5,000 to have a new transmission installed. Great. Everuthings workong fine. One morning my truck won’t start at all and I have to call toyota and have them tow my truck. The culprit? Faulty CPS sensor, Repaired under warranty. Well the other day the truck begins surging and dies on me several times. Os it possible the original transmission damage was actually caused by a failed CPS?

You paid $5,000 for a new transmission on a truck with a warranty, because dealer told you, without ever verifying the dent?!!!!!

Wow I guess $5,000 isn’t what it used to be

$5000 for a new transmission and install?

Good lord. Is it gold plated?

And to actually try to help, I don't see how a faulty CPS could ruin a transmission. But I don't see any actual evidence that your transmission was bad in the first place honestly.

They told me a dent in the oil pan didn't allow to oil to fully circulate through the transmission.

How much should a new transmission and install run?

It varies but it seems like $5k is a little steep. I only really have experience with manual transmissions and I never swap in brand new ones so maybe I am a little out of touch with the real cost. If I actually needed it, I would have sourced one from a yard since they are guaranteed to be low mileage at this point, then had a transmission shop swap it (if you can't do it yourself). But there is a lot more inconvenience to that than having it all done at the dealer. $5k to me might be different than $5k to you, everyone can be in a different place financially.

But my real question is if the pan was dented.....why didn't they just replace the pan? Typically on an auto transmission you can drop the pan itself, usually have to in order to change the fluid. I'd question why they didnt do this especially if the transmission itself wasn't presenting any other issues (like not shifting, slipping bad, etc). The pan would have been $100 or less I would assume, then probably one hour in labor + fluid.

This is the part where you remember the terms 'second opinion' and 'independent mechanic'.

They could have been right. Or not.

So this is a new instance?

To summarize. Your truck ran fine. You got a recall that replaced the CPS. Your recall CPS failed. Now the replacement for that is failing?

Or is it the transmission again.

I believe the second replacement is failing as did the first replacement, now I’m stuck wondering if the transmission failiure was at all related to the CPS failing because the sympomts are very similar.

    No.

Even my vivid imagination can make no correlation between the two.

Dude, the symptoms you were describing sound like a faulty CPS. You need to call Toyota Corporate and open a case file. I would have NEVER had them install a brand new tranny without verifying the damage first.

If I ever have a problem with my vehicles I make 100% sure I verify what's wrong with them and if it's my fault or is an actual problem with the truck that's Toyota's fault. Just saved myself ~$500 by talking to the dealership warranty rep for an hour because I had a little water leaking into the cab. They thought it was the Prinsu rack I installed but it was actually a seam that wasn't correct from factory. I can't imagine shelling out $5k on something I didn't verify.

otherwise you would have let toyota fix it free.

I cannot fathom paying out $5000 dollars without demanding to see the damage- this is crazy to me. And I cannot see how a faulty CPS has anything to do with the transmission no more than a fan belt would.
