Touch up paint

I found a pinhead size chip right next to the bedliner on top of the rear fender. Paint flecked off and looks like it might be down to the metal. Probably from when a NRS cam buckle flipped out and sounded like it hit metal.

Need some quicksand touchup paint... Guessing dealer would have it. I would almost assume the mfg ships a small vial with each vehicle like they did in the good old days. Or, auto parts shop? IDK because it has been forever since I had to deal with a touch up, but I am sure there will be more.

 

Dealer has it in parts department, best bet. Autozone/advance auto/etc also carries but they sort of skimp on colors. For example no one seems to carry pyrite mica or black sand pearl for 2nd gens.

 

Thanks, I'm dropping by the dealership tomorrow for 10K maintenance after we seal the deal on a 2000 4Runner for my daughter. I'll pick up a vial of the "old man tan".

 

You'll want to get it painted over as soon as you can before any rust develops. Had something similar happen on my 1st gen. Paint chip was down to the sheet metal and it started to rust in a matter of days before I could add any touch up paint. After that it just got worse and worse.

 

Duplicolor also had good touch up paint if you order online.

 

Can't go wrong getting it through the dealer. They VIN # match the color and it's the same price or maybe slightly less that the AutoZone places. Also it's an ample amount for a lifetime of touch ups.

I ordered a 202 black touch pen off of Amazon last week. It’s made by Toyota, and it worked perfectly for me. Up top is the link to the quicksand one.

I also ordered clearcoat touch up pen they make as well. The paint pen has a sanding tip on the cap so you can gently sand the chip before applying the paint.

 

Dealership will have it and it is going to be the closest color match

 

Don’t use the brush that comes in the tubes! It’s huge and will dump way too much paint. The code pictured is for quicksand.

 

It’s gonna look like shit regardless of what you do but yeah, I agree with the captqc. I’ve used a toothpick in the past, just to get enough paint to fill the chip and prevent rust

 

I was loading up my old suspension components in the bed but was too lazy to unlock and drop tailgate. Well now I have a chip from a coil spring hitting the tailgate...
From my experience paint pens and touch paint in general usually end up looking like a glob. Good from far but far from good.

That’s why you wipe down the brush on the tube it comes in so you only put minimal paint on the chip.

For touch up paint to be optimally done you’d be wetsanding it and putting on a little clear coat.

 

Still way to big for most chips. Check out the size of brush I use compared to the tube brush.

 

They also make touch up brushes specifically for this. I just ordered some, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

Thanks, all. Great info and tips. The chip is very small, less than 1mm, but I see metal in the center. I think I will try the paint pens and the touch-up brushes.
