To me it's two fold, at low speeds the bumper should protect against bumps and scrapes with no damage to the truck and at high speed it's going to control damage so that occupants have a better chance and the truck is less likely to be damaged beyond use, at least up to a point. Nothing is totally immune to damage but if you hit a deer (or kangaroo) in the middle of nowhere hopefully you can still limp the truck to cell coverage or a major highway if you're still alive and the radiator, steering and suspension aren't ruined.

Interesting to think about - if a truck with bull bar was to strike a pedestrian, I would bet that the plaintiff's attorney would seek excess damages based on the negligent after-market modification (bull bar) of vehicle that injured/killed his client.

    Not really how it works.

I was sued in an accident once for like $430,000. He got money for his hospital visit, rehab, prescriptions and a couple weeks of lost wages or a grand total of $15,000 which my insurance paid all of.

Did you have a bull bar or after-market bumper on your truck ? I'm kidding of course. The same argument has been applied in cases in which someone was shot with a modified hand gun (slide work, trigger job etc)

I run an ARB bumper (see my avatar), yesterday I was involved in a near head on collision with a jeep whose driver fell asleep and crossed into my lane giving me about 1 second to react. I tried to go around his left as there was a cement barrier on the right side of the road and no shoulder) but we still connected, each vehicle doing 90 kmh. Ill try to post pics tomorrow and you guys will all order ARB bumpers next week lol. Saved the lives of my family and dog by deflecting a jeep liberty at an impact speed of a combined 180kmh. No major injuries to anyone, three totalled vehicles (a third vehicle was also involved and t-boned me as we spun out of control).

Completely useless. Anything that is only connected at the bottom like that, simply has no strength. For that style to be anything useful it would need to be connected to something substantial through the grill. Or be mount to a frame mounted solid bumper.
All that thing does is reduce your approach angle, and maybe protect the plastic from some stone chips or a small bird.

I've posted this before. ARB vs Grand Prix. I was doing about 30, he crossed the center line on a turn and hit me offset. I was on the brakes so I don't know the actual impact speed ultimately. My bags didn't blow, his did. Tore the suspension out of my truck and bent up the frame. His car was basically obliterated from the front bumper to the firewall on the driver side.

I was a bit sore for a few hours but otherwise had no ill effects, outside of a sadness of losing the truck. Had I not had the ARB I don't know if the frame would have been quite as bent, but I'm certain the rest of the truck would have been pretty mangled.

I'd love the ARB on the 2016, but I don't like how much you have to cut to fit it, and how far out it sticks (further than even the 2013, which stuck out a bunch). If one fell into my lap I wouldn't turn it down, but I don't see myself outlaying the cash. They're also significantly more expensive now than they were in past trucks.
