The manual shift transfer cases are usually gear drive instead of chain drive like the automatics. Gear drive = Stronger

The 4Runner Trail uses the same T-Case shifter that the FJ Cruiser uses. Test drove one yesterday and had a bit of a problem getting it out of 4 lo due to someone who test drove it before me leaving it in 4lo on the lot. Took a little bit of coaxing to get it into 2hi. However, after taking it for a dirt drive test and shifting it through the transfer case gearing, it loosened up and shifted much better. The switch isn't quite as persnickety as the shifter, but I still like the shifter.

I would prefer a manual shifter for the t-case but mine came with the push button. I haven't even used it yet.

Yeah, mine came with the push button and it hasn't failed me yet, so I'll stick with that.

Though I agree that manual-anything is more better. :D

Got a question. I have had my 2009 Tacoma double cab baseline 4x4 model since feb 2009. I have used my 4x4 a handful of times and already my clutch is smoking when I try to drive out of a VERY wide 1 foot ditch. Basically like going over a speed bump. Well now my clutch is starting to act up shifting from 1st to 2nd gear (its very knotchy). I have 17,000 miles on him and when the clutch is heated it makes a whistling sound when in idle. BUT when I press the clutch pedal down (in idle) it goes away, thus telling me there is something wrong in the clutch. I went to Toyota today and they basically told me to go F*@k myself and it was not covered under "manufactured warrenty" and told me that it was the way I was driving. They knowingly put a 2 wheel drive clutch in my 4x4 truck and now it is my fault its starting to go out and they wont replace it under warrenty.

Does anybody have this issue? I am seriously pissed. These guys wouldn't even drive my truck when I offered for them to get in it at the dealership and drive it around in 4x4 to see what I was talking about. They wouldnt even pull up the specs of a TRD clutch if we wanted to put a TRD clutch in because they said their computer was "sketchy". Yeah NO CRAP!....they really said "sketchy" and they didn't have the capability to look up the specs! They were able to quote me $500 and something dollars for a new clutch (not the labor). ANY help would be appreciated on this. They did however tell me I could video tape it when it was making the noise and bring it to them for assessment.

Take it to another dealer. Sounds like your throwout bearing is making the noise.
