Toyota wont install Magnuson supercharger?

Called my local toyota dealer for a price quote on a magnuson super charger install. I already have the brand new in box unit. I was told they would not do the work because it is not an oem part. I have never heard this before. My bs-o-meter went off but the service writer was very confident that she was right. So is this true? Is toyota no longer installing anything but oem parts? They dont install superchargers anymore?

 

Call a different dealership, if there is a tech there confident in the install they should be able to give you an estimate. There is no Mitchell/Chiltons labor times for an install like this (custom) so it is 100% up to the tech doing the install & if the customer bites for the price.

 

Call a independent shop

 

Toyota installed mine. Was charged 600. The service manager is a friend but they do install non oem parts all the time.

 

It's not hard, why not install it yourself? It's all bolt on and then tow or limp to the dealer and have them do the TRD supercharger ECU flash.

Id love to install myself. I know i have the skills to do it. Two little munchkins a home remodel and that pesky full time job get in the way. These days i pay for convenience and i gladly pay for services that help keep the ship sailing smoothly.....and faster.

 

I’m with @Key-Rei wirh installing it yourself. If you’re not down with that, then go with @anthony250f in taking it to an independent mechanic. Eff dealerships. They’ll fuck it up

 

It’s not Toyota that won’t install its that specific dealer. They are independently owned and can choose to install or not install whaatever they want. Either way they won’t warranty the work so I’m suprised they passed on the labor.

 

Johnathon... Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach does them all the time. I know for a fact they did two tundras last week, a Tacoma, and two land cruisers last month shipped from Louisiana. Ask for Micah or Jamie. Tell them I sent you.

Pretty ballsy for you to say that the dealership will screw it up. How many super chargers have you installed? I have installed several. And I work at a dealership. Dealerships are getting to the point that if we sneeze wrong, a customer will be upset and burn us all in a survey. Maybe the dealerships that you have experienced are Cro-magnon and can't figure out what the difference between a screwdriver and wrench. I personally have talked to the Magnuson engineers. Most have dealership backgrounds in some shape or form. Keep living your forum life and let people with knowledge assist those in need.

I guess I should have been more specific in my post. I’m not intending to insult or discredit dealerships across my he board. If this particular dealership isn’t willing to install the S/C, they must not be very confident that they can do it. So why continue to push the issue and end up with a botched job.

I’ve done plenty of work with forced induction on both sides of the motor including both S/C’s and turbos, So I’m not living the forum life, I actually wrench in trucks. So perhaps you should keep the personal insults out of it

 

I agree why give work to a dealership that doesnt know they can do the work or wont work to get your business. Ive learned over the years that if you have problems getting someone to take the work then its best to find another avenue. I was really trying to find out if toyota was getting out of the install business. I need to find a tech that wants some side job work.

 

And while you are at it have whoever installs it also install the 2.85" pulley, makes a big difference.

 

Honestly that’s what I’ve seen most of the people do. They’ll give you a loaner car while they’re installing it so that will eliminate a rental. As far as ideas for a vaca you might have to wait till it gets warm again unless the wife likes are the Christmas shows and night of 1000 candles (which is actually pretty neat). Plus now there’ll be no waits for any restaurants lol.

As far as the guy who says install it yourself, maggy won’t warranty the work unless you’re certified (3 year-36k warranty).

Here is the truth with the aftermarket/OEM performance and dealers.

The dealerships have gone away from ANY modification to vehicles due to lack of skill and pricing plus the warranty issue.

nearly all dealers are what is called a "service" shop...tires,oil changes, belts....BASIC maintenance. most dealers are trying to get away from repairs of any sort due to CSR scores,lack of properly INDEPENDENT trained mechanics ( most are "technicians") and the liability issues that are running rampant as of late.

For those of you that don't know, the BAR is the governing body for dealers and independent shops alike. There is a "law" in the book that states all work to be performed must be in writing on the service ticket complete with labor time, taxes,shop supplies and all that jazz. Simple right?
the next section says that if it is not in writing on the ticket the the "tech" can not perform the work as it would be a legal violation because the customer was not informed and did not agree.

This is part of the issue since this is drilled into the heads of the new kids coming out of school.
The other part is there is no education in these schools dealing with aftermarket/OEM performance. When I was in High School, and when I went to AMI the instructors actually encouraged independent though and trial and error. Now, the lawyers have taken over and will murder you in court if there is not a line on the ticket. Hell, you cant even replace a bolt with one of your "personal" supply unless it is noted.

Now, what does this have to do with the supercharger.............

1) the techs don't have the skills to do this job
2) the dealer is playing the CYA game
3) the service writer has little to no knowledge of auto repair/maintenance (they are sales people now)
4) the biggest one, if is not OEM they can't get the warranty to cover the install if they screw up

I am starting at a KIA dealer Monday and this was the talk Thursday since they have a new car with twin turbos,intercoolers and other performance add-ons. You know there will be T-6 upgrades, liquid inter-coolers and all that.
The problem is, NONE of the guys working there can do this kind of work. So what is a dealer to do? Since Toyota is now DEMANDING ASE certs for entry level workers and T10 certs for masters there is little room for independent thought. By the book 100% if it not in the book it does not exist.

This is why independent shops like Gas Monkey and West Coast Customs are getting huge. even tyre and wheel kits are something dealers don't want to touch....

Think of most dealers as auto repair K-Marts.....in and out services only.

Then there is legality, for those in CA this is the biggest issue. Even and OEM supercharger kit could be considered illegal as it will modify the factory emissions control. Yes you have to update the software which could correct it back to proper emissions, but, is it certified/authorized, how is one to know? is there a sticker or decal......on and on.

You are in Georgia so I don't think you have the stupid strict emissions laws there, but, your dealer is being regulated by Toyota Corporate which is/was located in Torrance, CA. They have based the dealer regs on CA emissions rules.

Only non corporate dealers have SOME freedom to do aftermarket work.

even the powersports dealers, boat dealers, farm equipment dealers are facing this same thing. The last bike shop I worked for would turn away valve adjustment services, exhaust/ EFI mods, even engine rebuilds. it was swaps only......carbs were frowned upon to.
at that shop it was not lack of knowledge or skill, it was corporate rules that said no mods, no repairs, no vehicles older than 10 years........

I would find a performance shop or off road shop with a good reputation to do this work. The software update is something the dealer will do as there is a model or two with the supercharger installed from the factory.

It sucks, but, this is how things are going and it is going to get worse. Especially if the manufactures have their way and the government passes the law that restricts all computer diagnostics to dealers only....LOOOOONG story on that.

 

Spot on, Gixerkiller. I've been at my dealership for almost 8 years. I have watched the kids coming out of schools with less and less knowledge that us older guys learned long ago. They flat put took carburetors out of the lessons, because dealerships don't see them anymore. All my supercharger installs were TRD ones before they discontinued them.
I have thought about venturing out away from the dealership since the technician's hands are tied now. Used to be fun keeping customer's vehicles up and running. Now they cry about this rattle and that 1 mpg drop. Sir....you are still getting 52 mpg. Quitcha bitchin.
