2014 TRD Sport, 6 ft bed extra cab mileage??

Hey guys! New to TW. My truck has A/T tires and an ARE extra height camper shell and running boards. The truck has 50K miles, I have been diligent about all scheduled maintenance and I consistently get around 14 miles per gallon. Anyone else had similar experiences?

This is not my truck but it is nearly identical, minus racks on shell and cab.

I have an access cab, no extra weight, 13-14 seems to be about average for me over the last 2,000 miles. Not what I was expecting

 

I rented a 2014 chevy FULL SIZE crew cab v-8 for a 1000 trip and the truck averaged 21 miles too the gallon ,my 2015 Tacoma dblc v-6 gets about 16-20 on the average ,so as far as I am concerned Tacomas suck as far as gas milage goes.

 

YEP, tacomas suck with MPG. I had big hopes for the 3rd gen, maybe a turbo 4 banger but seems only marginally better than 2nd Gen.

I'd bet the high camper shell is making it worse. I get 15 if there's major traffic, 16-18 on the usual.

 

Radius on A/T tires is same as stock... Before I put on the shell I was doing marginally better. Nowhere near the 18-21 that I am supposed to be getting.

 

If I drove 40 on flat, no traffic, I’d get 21-22

 

Don't think there is anything that I could do to get anywhere close to 21 or even 17.

 

My 2015 double cab short bed with a short ARE shell gets 20-22, automatic, 35k miles. All stock.

Welcome aboard. I hit about 19 with my 15 DCLB with LEER shell. But then I don't drive fast either

 

I have no idea why it has such great gas mileage but but it's not uncommon on this site. I think it has to do so many variables that
it's hard to quantify. Tires probably. I drive about 70 to 75 most times on the interstate.

 

A/T tires set at 35psi up front and 33 psi out back with a camper shell here. I'll get 16.5 mpg most of the year when driving conservatively. But winter blend fuel is upon us so I don't expect any better than 16 mpg until April.

Bottom line: the mpg difference between a 4.0L V6 Tacoma and a 5.7L V8 Tundra is not much and should be more.

 

I'm at around 13 or 14 and if I can manage to keep my damn foot out of the supercharger, maybe 15 or 16.

 

I just drove my entire tank in town, lots of stop and go and came in at about 13. Gonna really drive conservatively next tank and see what I get. I'll let you know. Also gonna max out my PSi and see if that helps.

 

With A/T I was averaging 18.5-19 with mud terrains now I get 16.5-17. Perhaps a tune up or lighter foot? What kind of tires do you have if they are 10plys that may be a cause of it they are super heavy.
