So I’m assuming platinums will work in lieu of iridiums

The wear that occurs during the last 20% of a spark plug’s life will cost you far more in reduced gas mileage than the cost of a new set of plugs. Wow if your going to let them go like that get some IR plugs in ASAP.

Just looked at the Amazon link above. Considering it. Haven’t seen any decrease at all so far I watch my mpg very closely. I actually saw a surprising increase after my mbrp cat back install 3months ago

That's what I use and have been using for literally decades. I spread that stuff on anything that I want to come back apart again.

Just use sparingly. I haven't heard any Tacoma owners having the plugs stuck in the heads?

Reviving an old thread. Keeping it simple with factory plugs. Bought the truck at 30K. Currently at 60K...we’ll see if I still have the originals. Considering I’m still getting 21-23 mpgs is impressive on factory plugs with double the mileage on them.

It's your truck and your time. For me I've got better things to do than change plugs every 30K miles. Iridium plugs are cheaper in the long run both in terms of cost and time spent on menial tasks.

yea i have no interest in changing plugs every 30k. put the iridium's in this time and that may be it for me.

I put in Iridium on my first change and noticed 0 difference, will be changing them at 60K regardless. Changing plugs in the 4.0 is a PITA, but I like to read them plugs so... :notsure:

+1 on the PITA to changing the 4.0's plugs and it isn't really that bad. (try any american V6 passenger car. Holy craptacular access to the back bank of plugs) When mine gets to 60K I'll pull one, easy to get to, plug. Just for a quick check.

While I don't think its that difficult to change them ^(try any transverse mounted V6) I just think in this day its kind of archaic to change them every 30k? It's been about 5 months since I put them in (see post #56) and no issues, runs the same and MPG same. So why not again?

You should pull all of them to see if one cylinder/ injector is wonky

The 1GR-FE is an archaic engine, first installed in 2002 4Runners

Puzzled by the claim of 4.0 being a pain in the ass to change plugs. Thought it to be relatively easy. You should do a 5.7L Hemi in a Dodge 2500....

IRRIDIUM. I've had excellent results. Changed @ 52k and 147k. Will keep using them in the future

Comparatively speaking the Tacoma engine is "easy" to change the plugs. If you are comparing the task to most any FWD V6 auto. But, IMHO an hour spent doing a task that can be safely put off is a PITA. Some people like working on their truck and more power to them. Personally I'd rather be doing other things. For that matter if I wanted to spend my weekends working on vehicles, I would have kept my jeep, that thing was always needing something fixed on it.

No, the reason to buy a Tacoma (among others) is the fact that they are dead reliable and don't require constant maintenance. Iridium plugs simply enhance its reliability and should have been installed at the factory.

Every 4 banger I’ve ever changed plugs on has been stupid easy. It’s a PITA comparatively. Honestly it takes the same amount of time to switch plugs in a Subaru Legacy.

@Chuy tagging you here because you got me thinking in the mpg thread..

Have you had any ignition coil failures on your truck? Just curious because i was wondering if there is any evidence of iridium plugs making the coils work harder. Like maybe if the resistance of the plug is too great, it will stress the coil.

Ive had other cars ( not anything toyota) develop symptoms using iridium when copper was specified. Not any heavy misfires, but small ones ocassionally and phantom p0300s that would come and go.

I cant prove it, but my theory is that the coil internals are built to match a specific resistance in the plug.

    Thoughts?

To your last point about specific resistance - I do not know definitively and have not seen any printed material. I will say that a reputable spark plug manufacturer would not list a plug for a specific application without ensuring it will function properly. Note that Denso and NGK list iridium plugs for our Tacos and they are partially owned by Toyota. So, in a way you can say Toyota does not oppose the use of iridium plugs in our trucks.

As for road experience, I switched to iridiums at 50K. My Taco is approaching 170K and has original coils. It has never missed. Matter of fact, the engine line has never been activated, other than usual during startup. I have iridiums in my daughter's Corolla and Camry as well (OEM called for copper plugs); they also have original coils and have never missed, unless the girls have kept the info away from me. Now, for the Lexus ES350 - it came with stock Denso iridiums and I have replaced 3 coils - lucky for me, all in the front (the rear coils/plugs are buried in the firewall). Maybe, I should put copper plugs in it! haha.
